Box Score ONEONTA, N.Y. (January 22, 2013) – The No. 20 Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team saw its eight-game winning streak snapped at Hartwick College Tuesday, falling to the Hawks, 63-56 in Lambros Arena.

The loss drops the Ducks to 14-2 overall and 5-1 in the Empire 8. Hartwick moves to 3-3 in the conference and 11-6 overall.

Stevens came out strong, opening a 10-2 lead 4:11 into the action, getting a pair of three-pointers from senior guard Russ Thompson (West Orange, N.J.). The advantage moved to 10 when Thompson drilled his third triple of the first six-plus minutes, and following a stop, another three-pointer, this one from junior forward Kevin McManamy (Charlotte, N.C.), made it 18-5 Ducks with 11:23 left in the first.

A 7-0 run by the Hawks, trimmed the Duck edge to six, and Hartwick continued to chip away, eventually tying the game at 24 behind a pair of free throws from junior forward Jared Suderley (Newport, N.Y.) with 2:07 remaining in the first.

The two teams traded buckets the rest of the opening period with the Ducks taking a 30-28 lead into the locker room.

Hartwick shot 45.8 percent (11-for-24) over the first 20 minutes, while the Ducks shot 28.5 percent (10-for-26).

Both teams struggled mightily from the field in the opening moments of the second half, but the hosts were able to gain a slight upper hand with a 37-35 lead thanks to a three-point play from Suderly with 16:20 left. That tally held for the next 3:43 as the Ducks were able to break a 4:35 scoring drought with two free throws from junior guard Andrew Meszaros (Phoenixville, Pa.).

A defensive stop and a Thompson elbow jumper gave the Ducks a two-point lead, and at the 7:55 mark a three-pointer from sophomore forward Patrick Sabatino (Westfield, N.J.) gave the Ducks a 44-39 advantage. Hartwick came back with six-straight points to take a 45-44 edge with a little more than seven minutes on the clock as the see-saw battled continued with Stevens re-taking the lead with two at the line from Sabatino.

Hartwick regained the lead thanks to a corner three from junior forward Mike Geisser (East Hanover, N.J.), but the Ducks answered on their next time down when Thompson canned a jumper.

The Hawks went up three points with back-to-back layups and pushed their lead to five when Suderley hit 1-of-2 at the line to make it 56-51 with just 2:05 to go. An empty possession for the Ducks and two more Suderley free throws had the score at 58-51 Hartwick, but Thompson delivered from the outside to get Stevens back within four. That three would be as close as the Ducks could get with the Haws converting at the line down the stretch to seal the win.

Thomspon hit five three-pointers to finish with 20 points. He also had three assists and a pair of rebounds. Sabatino had 16 points and two rebounds.

Suderley had 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead Hartwick, while junior guard Anthony Keane (Staten Island, N.Y.) had 14.

Stevens shot 39.6 percent (19-for-48) from the field and 7-for-21 (33.3 percent) from three. The Ducks hit 11 of their 17 attempts at the line. Hartwick finished at 40.4 percent (21-for-52) from the floor and was 17-for-26 (65.4 percent) at the stripe. The Hawks also ended with a 39-29 advantage on the glass.
