HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 30, 2013) – The nationally ranked No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team took down United Volleyball Conference rival No. 12 Vassar College, 3-1, in Canavan Arena on Wednesday evening. Stevens, led by three players with double-digit kills, is now 2-2 on the season after its first NCAA Division III match of the 2013 season.
After a shaky first set in which Stevens lost, 27-25, the Ducks rolled past Vassar, 25-13, 25-18, 25-15, to complete the victory and first conference win of the season.
Leading the way for the Ducks was junior
Ryan Seifert (Chicopee, Mass.) who picked up a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs a piece. Seifert hit at a .304 clip in three sets played and tallied 15 points in the four-set affair.
Senior
Thomas Hannum (Libertyville, Ill.) and junior
David Evans (Penfield, N.Y.) also eclipsed double-digit kills. Hannum registered 10, while Evans recorded 14. Both student-athletes also hit over .500 in the match and combined for nine digs in four sets.
Sophomore
Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) handed out a match-high and season-best 50 assists in the victory to go along with five digs. Aeckerle totaled all but four of the team's assists in the match that the Ducks hit .465 overall.
Four other players for Stevens added four-plus kills and hit over .571. Senior
Jake Modestow (Hampden, Mass.) tallied a perfect hitting percentage with five kills and six total blocks, while sophomore
Etan Bennett (Rochester, N.Y.) went four of five in kills. Senior
James Mataras (River Vale, N.J.) posted a .667 hitting percentage with four kills, and sophomore
Ian Tyger (York, Pa.) also chipped in four more and hit .571.
The Ducks reached 12-plus kills in each set and never hit below .370 as a team (.652 in second set, .480 in third).
Stevens returns to the court this Saturday in a tri-match against Ramapo College and Division I Sacred Heart University. The tri-match is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
