HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 5, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team dropped its season-opening match to the University of Waterloo (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada) by a score of 3-0 Saturday night at the Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J. The set scores were 25-21, 26-24 and 25-18.
Waterloo is now 9-1 overall, while the Ducks fall to 0-1. The Canadian collegiate men's volleyball season begins in late October.
The Ducks opened the first set by taking two-point margins on three separate occasions, the last being at 10-8, but the Warriors answered, eventually scoring five of the set's final six points to turn a 20-20 deadlock into a 25-21 win.
After the Ducks opened a 5-3 lead in the second, neither team would lead by more than one point until Stevens pushed the margin back to two at 15-13 following a service ace from senior outside hitter
Thomas Hannum (Libertyville, Ill.). The lead moved to four (19-15) behind a block from senior middle hitter
Jake Modestow (Hampden, Mass.), but the guests battled back to cut the lead to one (20-19). The Ducks tallied back-to-back points behind junior outside hitter
Ryan Seifert (Chicopee, Mass.) to push the edge back to three at 23-20, with the Warriors clawing back to knot things at 24 and take the commanding 2-0 lead 26-24. Waterloo scored six of the final seven points in the set.
In the third, Waterloo jumped on top 4-1, and after the Ducks got back within one at 6-5, things remained close for the next few points. A service ace from senior middle hitter
James Mataras (River Vale, N.J.) brought Stevens within one at 10-9, but UW went on to score six of the next seven points to open a 16-10 margin,and the Ducks were unable to get closer than five the rest of the way.
Stevens was led by Hannum who hit a team-best .238 with seven kills and a match-high three service aces. Seifert added six kills, with sophomore
Ian Tyger (York, Pa.) netting five. Junior
Paul Dubuke (Camarillo, Calif.) led the Ducks with four digs and Modestow tallied one block solo and three block assists.
The Ducks hit .120 as a team, and sophomore setter
Kevin Aecklerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) tallied a team-high 12 assists.
Waterloo hit .256 as a team, had a total of 10.0 team blocks, and tallied 40 assists. Senior setter
Scott Thompson (St. Mary's, Ont.) had a match-high 33 assists, while sophomore
Zachary Doherty (Goderich, Ont.) finished with 13 kills.
The Ducks are heading to Puerto Rico for a training trip Sunday morning and will return to competitive action January 18 when they host Harvard University in Walker Gymnasium. Match-time is set for 7 p.m.
