ONEONTA, N.Y. (February 2, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's swimming team closed out the dual-meet portion of its schedule with a 165-113 win over Empire 8 rival and previously undefeated Hartwick College Saturday at Moyer Pool in Oneonta, N.Y.
The Ducks broke nine pool-records as a team and improved to 3-2 in dual-meets. Hartwick suffered its first defeat of the year, falling to 14-1.
Freshman
Ravi Sun (Arkadelphia, Ark.), junior
Simas Jarasunas (Vilnius, Lithuania), senior
Daniel Munt (Raleigh, N.C.) and junior
Tyler Hessler (Southbury, Conn.) opened the meet with a pool-record in the 200-yard medley relay, turning in a time of 1:35.04.
Sophomore
Wesley Elford (Phoenix, Ariz.) broke the pool-best in winning the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:43.68, and senior
Alex Benham (Raleigh, N.C.) did the same in taking first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:43.87. Freshman
Tommy Wolinski (Wallington, N.J.) was second and would have had a pool-record time of 1:44.19.
Senior
Greg Charriez (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.) tallied another first in the 100-yard backstroke, turning in a Moyer Pool record of 52.67. He was followed by freshman
Taylor Nichols (Clifton Park, N.Y.) in second (53.94).
Jarasunas won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 58.76 and freshman
Byron Held (Beaverton, Ore.) was third, clocking a 1:00.80. Senior
John Hu (Oak Harbor, Wash.) tallied a first in the 200-yard butterfly (1:55.91), with sophomore
Price Hu (Oak Harbor, Wash.) taking third (1:57.47), and junior
Shawn Hanak (North Royalton, Ohio) earned a second in the 50-yard freestyle with a 21.48.
Wolinski and junior
Nick Noga (Oriskany, N.Y.) went one-three in the 100-yard freestyle (47.97, 48.52), and Sun's second top-spot of the day came in the 200-yard backstroke where he turned in a pool-record of 1:52.98. Nichols was second in the event with a 1:58.61.
Jarasunas broke the pool-mark in winning the 200-yard breaststroke, notching a 2:09.80, and Elford took second in the 500-yard freestyle with a 4:45.76. Munt took first and set the Moyer mark in the 100-yard butterfly with a 51.97 as teammate
Mitchell Epperly (Mahwah, N.J.) finished third.
The final notable finish of the day saw
John Hu, Sun and freshman
Joshua Lefeber (Franklin, Wis.) sweep the top-three places in the 200-yard individual medley as Hu's 1:54.28 was good for a new pool-record.
Stevens now turns its attention to the UNYSCSA/Empire 8 Championships that are scheduled to take place at Ithaca College from February 20-23.
