Blocks and Aces Lead Men’s Volleyball to Sweep of SUNYIT

Box Score UTICA, N.Y. (February 27, 2013) – The No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team rolled to a three-set sweep of United Volleyball Conference foe SUNYIT on Wednesday evening in Utica, N.Y. With the win, Stevens is now 15-4 overall and 7-0 in the UVC. Every available player at the match saw action in at least one set.

The Ducks cruised past SUNYIT, 25-13, 25-21, 25-8, by way of 13 total blocks and seven service aces. Stevens recorded 20 block assists and three solo blocks in the victory and also tallied 24 kills in 71 attempts. In the straight-sets win, the Ducks also registered an impressive 29 digs.

Senior James Mataras (River Vale, N.J.) led the way for Stevens with six total blocks, while classmate Jake Modestow (Hampden, Mass.) chipped in four more blocks and three kills.

Another senior, Thomas Hannum (Libertyville, Ill.) contributed a team-best four kills with a block, and sophomore Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) handed out 10 assists in one set played.

Freshmen Thomas Prescott-Wright (La Mesa, Calif.) and Derrick Sokol (Newbury Park, Calif.) combined for four blocks and three kills.

A complete box score will be available later tonight.

Stevens will have a tough road tri-match this Saturday, March 2 and Juniata College. The Ducks play No. 11 Stevenson University at 2 p.m. and then take on No. 3 Juniata at 4 p.m. Stevens defeated Stevenson earlier this year in three sets at home.
