Krause Keys Women’s Basketball Win at Stockton; Ducks Improve to 11-10

POMONA, N.J. (February 4, 2013) – Freshman forward Dylan Krause (Atlanta, Ga.) scored a game-high 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team to a 56-50 win over Richard Stockton College Monday night. With the win, the Ducks improve to 11-10 overall.
 
Stevens took a 29-22 lead into the locker room after a solid first half of play. The Ducks shot 44 percent from the field, hit two of their five three-pointers and assisted on seven of their 12 made baskets.
 
The Ducks jumped out to a 12-6 margin 7:40 into the game behind back-to-back layups from junior forward Avis Benjamin (Queens, N.Y.) and senior forward Maggie Kowalska (Edison, N.J.). A three-pointer from Krause pushed the Stevens lead to seven points (19-12) with under eight minutes remaining in the period, and after Stockton cut the lead to three points, six straight for the Ducks gave them their largest advantage of the half at 27-18 with 2:44 on the clock.
 
Krause was marvelous for the Ducks with 14 points on 6-for-7 shooting and opened the second period with a triple to give Stevens 34-22 advantage.
 
The Ospreys came back to cut the lead to eight points (36-28) with 16:40 to play, but Benjamin found an open Miranda Ripken (Fallston, Md.) to slow the building Stockton momentum.
 
Trailing 42-31with 12:32 on the clock, Richard Stockton went on an 8-1 spurt to close within four points, but the Ducks responded with a 6-0 spurt of their own, pushing the lead back to 10 with 6:11 left in the game. Ripken canned a pair of jumpers to key the run and get the Ducks back with a comfortable lead.
 
Senior guard Che'Na Thompson (Salem, N.J.) and freshman guard Shannon Clark (Folsom, Pa.) scored two on consecutive trips sandwiched around a stop to get Richard Stockton within six points at the 2:10 mark, but a pair of Ripken free throws with 1:03 remaining helped seal the eventual six-point win.
 
Krause added five rebounds to her 21 points and also tallied a pair of assists. Ripken had 11 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists, while Benjamin had eight points, five boards and three assists. Kowalska tallied four points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out four assists. Junior guard Molly Spadaro (Sewell, N.J.) had six points, two steals and two rebounds and fellow junior Jen Thompson (Linwood, N.J.) finished with six points and three rebounds.
 
The Ducks finished shoot 37.7 percent (20-for-53) from the field and 5-for-10 (50 percent) from three. They hit 11 of their 16 free throws, tallied 12 assists and led from the first basket on.
 
Stockton (10-11) struggled with the Stevens defense all night, shooting 25.4 percent (17-for-67) from the field and just 2-for-18 from three. The hosts hit 14-of-16 at the line and out-rebounded the Ducks 48-39.
