Men’s Volleyball Blanks Medaille and Elmira

BUFFALO, N.Y. (February 9, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team swept a pair of United Volleyball Conference rivals in the first crossover of the season on Saturday at Medaille College. Stevens took down the host Mavericks in the opener and then blanked Elmira College in the second match of the afternoon.

The Ducks, now 6-3 and 3-0 in the UVC, entered the crossover ranked sixth in the AVCA Top 15 poll, while Elmira and Medaille were ranked 11th and 14th, respectively.

In the opening sweep of Medaille, 25-23, 25-19, 25-20, junior Ryan Seifert (Chicopee, Mass.) paced the Ducks with nine kills. Senior Jake Modestown (Hampden, Mass.) was close behind with eight kills and added seven total blocks to lead all players.

Sophomore Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) dished out a match-high 29 assists to go along with two digs, two blocks and a kill. Junior David Evans (Penfield, N.Y.) chipped in seven kills, three digs and two blocks for Stevens.

Fellow sophomore Etan Bennett (Rochester, N.Y.) hit a match-best .857 with six kills in seven attempts. Bennett also registered two services aces in the sweep.

Freshman Chris Vaughan (Medford, N.J.) added eight digs for Stevens.

In the straight sets victory over the Soaring Eagles, 26-24, 25-15, 25-20, Evans led the way with 11 kills and hit .450. He also posted six digs.

Modestow recorded another solid outing with six kills in seven attempts to go along with four digs and four blocks.

Bennett was impressive at the net with nine total blocks and five kills. He also contributed three digs, while Seifert tallied eight kills in two sets played.

Aeckerle once again led the Ducks in assists with 37 and pitched in with two digs and a service ace.

Vaughan added to his day defensively with seven more digs.

Stevens will be back on the court tomorrow at 11 a.m. against D'Youville College to wrap up the first crossover of the season.
