HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 11, 2013) – The nationally ranked No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team will travel up to Nazareth College's Kidera Gymnasium this weekend to play for the 2013 United Volleyball Conference championship and an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball tournament. Stevens enters this weekend's championship as the No. 2 seed with a 23-8 overall record and a 10-1 mark in the UVC.
Nazareth earned the top seed in the conference tournament by posting a perfect 11-0 mark in UVC matches and 31-1 overall ledger. The Golden Flyers have been the nation's No. 1 or No. 2 team since February 12.
Stevens will open up with No. 7 Elmira College (19-14) on Saturday, April 13 at 12:30 p.m. The Ducks and Elmira met up in the first UVC Crossover this season in Buffalo on February 9, where Stevens came away with a 3-0 victory (26-24, 25-15, 25-20) over the then No. 11 Soaring Eagles. In the match, Stevens dominated all statistical aspects with a .286 hitting percentage to just .021 for Elmira and also posted 13 total blocks (19 assists, five solo) to seven for the Soaring Eagles.
Junior
David Evans (Penfield, N.Y.) led Stevens with 11 kills in the sweep, while sophomores
Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) and
Etan Bennett (Rochester, N.Y.) also recorded strong performances. Aeckerle handed out a match-high 37 assists and Bennett put down five kills to go along with a match-best nine total blocks.
If victorious in the quarterfinals, the Ducks will move on to play the winner of No. 3 SUNY New Paltz (25-5) and No. 6 Medaille College (17-14) at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Nationally, New Paltz is ranked fifth, while Medaille is 12th. Stevens swept Medaille on the same day as the three-set win over Elmira, and defeated New Paltz in five sets in Hoboken on February 13.
The championship match is slated to begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
