OLEAN, N.Y. (April 12, 2013) - The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team lost Game One of a Empire 8 Conference doubleheader at Houghton College, 3-0, and led 3-0 in Game Two in the fifth inning before the contest was suspended due to darkness.
Today's suspended game will resume at 10 a.m. tomorrow and followed by the regularly scheduled doubleheader which is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
In the opener, Stevens recorded eight hits, three from
senior Tyler Courter (Glenwood, N.J), but could not push a run across the plate.
Houghton scored once in the bottom of the first and one more in the third to build a 2-0 lead. The Highlianders final run came in the bottom of the fifth after extinguishing a Stevens rally attempt in the top half of the inning
In the top half, the Ducks best opportunity to plate a run came after three straight singles with one out loaded the bases. Courter and sophomores
Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.) and
Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.) all picked up base hits, but the inning ended on a double play in the ensuing at bat.
Freshman
Greg Jakusik (The Woodlands, Texas) was dealt the loss in 2.1 innings pitched. Jakusik allowed two runs on five hits with five strikeouts before being replaced by classmate
Ryan Patterson (Staten Island, N.Y.). Patterson tossed 2.2 innings and allowed one earned run with a pair of punchouts. The third freshman of the game,
Daniel McIntyre (Lakeway, Texas), finished up the opener with a strikeout in one inning.
Houghton's Kameron Konert tossed a complete game shutout with three strikeouts and no walks.
Neither pitching staff surrendered a walk in Game One.
