POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (April 17, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to cap off a come-from-behind victory over Vassar College, 5-3, on Wednesday afternoon. This marks the second comeback win after eight innings for Stevens this season, who is now 16-14 overall.

The Ducks trailed, 1-0, after the first inning and then went down, 3-0, after two but blanked Vassar for the remainder of the game and chipped away at the deficit until the offense tallied three runs in their last at bats of the contest for the win.

Vassar touched up the Ducks' starting pitcher senior Kevin Mathews (Jackson, N.J.) for seven hits and three runs in the first two innings but were shut down after freshman Greg Jakusik (The Woodlands, Texas) entered the game in the third. Jakusik no-hit the Brewers over three innings pitched with six strikeouts and allowed Stevens to get back into the contest with runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Stevens' first run of the ballgame was scored by sophomore Marc Calleo (Bayville, N.Y.) after he singled to lead off the fifth.  Calleo moved up to second base on a passed ball and then to third on a base hit from sophomore Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.). Junior Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) drove Calleo in on a fielder's choice before stealing his first of two bases in the game.

Calleo went 2-for-3 in the contest with one RBI, while Nickels batted 2-for-5. Allen walked twice and scored a run in three trips to the plate and also earned his third save of the season with one punchout.

In the sixth, sophomore Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.) reached base on a one-out double and scored on a single from Calleo. Hennelly picked up two hits in four at bats with a stolen base.

Senior Michael Donovan (Frisco, Texas) delivered the big blow in the game with a one-out, two-run double in the ninth inning with the bases loaded. Stevens put three runners on by way of walks before Donovan drove in Calleo and freshman Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.). Allen tacked on the insurance run by way of a wild pitch.

Junior Mark Poinsett (Ocean Gate, N.J.) earned the victory in 2.1 innings of perfect relief. Poinsett struck out two batters for his first win of the season.

Stevens travels to Lehman College on Friday for a single game before hosting SUNY Brockport for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. on April 20.
