ROCHESTER, N.Y. (April 20, 2013) – The nationally ranked No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team suffered a tough 17-8 Empire 8 Conference loss to Nazareth College on Saturday afternoon in winter-like conditions. Saturday's game took place on Nazareth's old field due to the Empire 8 Track & Field Championships being held on campus as well. This was the first time since 2004 that Nazareth played on its grass field.
Stevens (10-3, 4-1) never led in the game and fell behind, 4-0, within the first 3:09 of the ballgame. Nazareth took the opening faceoff and scored just seven seconds into the contest and then went up, 2-0, just 23 seconds later. The Golden Flyers put two more on the board just six seconds apart around the 12-minute mark.
The Ducks would fell behind, 7-0, with just over two minutes remaining in the first period and netted their first goal of the contest with under a second left in the quarter. Freshman
Griffin Rock (Bay Shore, N.J.) scored his first of three goals in the showdown as time expired in the first 15 minutes off a pass from sophomore
Michael Maroon (Virginia Beach, Va.).
Nazareth continued to dominate the game in the second quarter and eventually built a 13-3 advantage by halftime. The Golden Flyers went up, 9-1, before Rock earned his second score of the contest. After another Nazareth goal, senior
Harrison Dorne (Morristown, N.J.) netted a man-up goal off an assist from Rock to make the score, 10-3, but that was the last goal the Ducks could come up with in the half.
Three straight goals by Nazareth closed out the first 30 minutes of action.
In the second half, Maroon got Stevens on the board first just one minute in. Nazareth went back up by 10 goals just 1:20 later before senior
Nicolas Philippi (Mullica Hill, N.J.) earned his first point on the afternoon. The Ducks got one goal closer before the end of the third period, 14-6, with 2:15 remaining on a goal by junior
Charlie Cronin (Northampton, Mass.) which was assisted by senior
Rich Dupras (Hillsborough, N.J.).
Rock and Dorne tallied goals for Stevens in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore
Matthew Deiner (Millstone Twp., N.J.) was dealt the loss in 48:55 in cage for Stevens. Deiner allowed 13 goals and made eight saves in the contest. He came out of the game in the second quarter for freshman
Austin Boyd (Bellevue, Wash.), who played 11:05 between the pipes. Boyd made three saves and gave up four goals.
Stevens hosts Hartwick College on April 24 at 7 p.m. and then wraps up the regular season against Ithaca College on the 27th for Spring Sports Day beginning at 1 p.m.
