Practice Highlights and Interview from Tufts

HOBOKEN, N.J. (May 9, 2013)
– The Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team, ranked 15th in the nation, will take on No. 6 Tufts University on Saturday, May 11 at 12 p.m. in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Championship in Medford, Mass. This will mark the second time this season that Stevens (13-4) and Tufts (15-4) have battled each other.

In the March 16 showdown, in which the Jumbos took down Stevens, 18-14, at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, Tufts jumped out to a 7-2 first quarter lead and never relinquished its advantage. The Ducks attempted a fourth quarter push with seven goals but could only get to within a two-score difference at 13-11 and 15-13 in the frame before the Jumbos netted three of the final four markers in the contest. It was Tufts' first victory of the season.

Senior Nicolas Philippi (Mullica Hill, N.J.) paced the Stevens offense with six goals on 18 shots, while sophomore Michael Maroon (Virginia Beach, Va.) handed out seven assists in the set back.

Junior Tim Culloty (Mahwah, N.J.) scooped up a game-high six groundballs and won four faceoffs in seven tries. Freshman Brett Incollingo (Yardley, Pa.) also picked up six groundballs and led the contest with 14 faceoff wins in 25 attempts.

In goal, sophomore Matthew Deiner (Millstone Twp., N.J.) made 11 stops between the pipes in all 60 minutes.

Tufts was led offensively by Beau Wood and Cole Bailey. Wood tallied seven points on four goals and three assists, while Bailey netted a hat trick to go along with two assists.

Jumbos netminder, Patton Watkins, was a true difference maker in the contest with 19 saves in the victory.

NCAA First Round – How the Teams Moved On

Stevens advanced to the Second Round of the Championship with a 13-11 victory over Montclair State University last night in Hoboken in what was one of the more exciting matchups in the 13 opening round games on Wednesday.

The Ducks opened the contest with a 5-1 cushion more than halfway through the second quarter only to watch Montclair bounce back with four straight score to knot the contest up at 5-5 with less than two minutes left before halftime. Stevens went into intermission with a 6-5 lead. The Red Hawks came out of the break on fire and tallied three consecutive goals to obtain an 8-6 edge just 3:04 into the third quarter. Stevens regained the lead with three straight scores of its own at 9-8 over a four-plus minute span before Montclair tied it back up at 9-9 just 13 seconds later. That was the final deadlock in the tussle as the Ducks scored four of the final six goals to take the 13-11 decision.

Philippi and senior Rich Dupras (Hillsborough, N.J.) each posted hat tricks in the win, while junior Charlie Cronin (Northampton, Mass.) tallied three points on two goals and one assist to go along with three groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Sophomore Brian Fahy (Eastchester, N.Y.) played solid defensively with five caused turnovers and four groundballs. Deiner made 12 stops in cage for his 12th win of the season.

Tufts rolled to a first round victory by 26-4 score over Norwich University yesterday afternoon. The Jumbos led, 8-1, after one quarter and improved on the difference heading into halftime at 15-4. Tufts shutout Norwich in the second half and posted 11 more goals to account for the final tally. Twelve different Jumbos picked up a goal in the contest, while Wood paced the team with six of his own.

Jeff Chang won six of 11 faceoffs and recorded a game-high eight groundballs. Watkins and Brian Droesch split time between the pipes and combined for 13 saves.

Tufts dominated every statistical category in the game for its largest victory of the 2013 season.
