HOBOKEN, N.J. (August 30, 2013)
 – Stevens Institute of Technology gave eighth-ranked Messiah College all it could handle in a non-conference field hockey game Friday, finally succumbing, 2-1 in overtime at the De Baun Athletic Complex in each team's season-opener.

After Messiah broke a scoreless deadlock 12:25 into the second period, Stevens came close on countless occasions, finally breaking through with 3:12 left in regulation as sophomore forward Dailyn Brook (Cherry Hill, N.J.) was able to deflect in a blast off the stick of senior captain Megan Traub (Berkeley Heights, N.J.). On the play, Traub received an insert on a penalty corner from senior captain Marguerite Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.), faked her defender before ripping a shot that Brook tipped in.

Stevens (0-1) had several penalty corners late in regulation but the Falcons' (1-0) defense was able to do just enough to send the game into overtime.

In the extra period, the two teams went back-and-forth in the opening moments before Messiah generated the first strong chance with a breakaway. Freshman Moriah Pfautz (Ephrata, Pa.) found herself one-on-one against freshman goalkeeper Emily Stukenborg (Stockholm, N.J.), with the freshman keeper denying the rookie forward. Just seconds later, junior back Becky Ely (Newtown, Pa.) connected with senior forward Brook Sands (Lancaster, Pa.) behind the Stevens defense, and this time Sands was able to elude Stukenborg and deliver the Falcons a win.

Pfautz scored the first goal of the game at the 47:25 mark, converting a long breakaway opportunity into a goal.

Despite the two teams going into the intermission with the scoreboard showing zeros, each team had chances with the Ducks taking six penalty to corners to just two for the Falcons. On several corners, Chavez inserted to Traub with the senior back firing quality shots on goal that just missed or were saved by Messiah goalie Molly Gebrosky (Latrobe, Pa.). Gebrosky finished with seven saves on the day, while Stukenborg had six for the Ducks.

Stevens ended the game with a 19-14 edge in shots, including a 13-7 margin in the second half. The Ducks also had a decisive 14-7 advantage in penalty corners.

Stevens will return to action Saturday when it hosts No. 12 The College of New Jersey at the De Baun Athletic Complex at 4 p.m. The Ducks will be looking to avenge a 5-3 loss on August 31, 2012. All the action can be seen live at www.Empire8.TV.
