ITHACA, N.Y. (September 28, 2013) – Senior forward Rachel Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.) scored two goals to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team to a 3-2 Empire 8 win at Ithaca College Saturday afternoon.

Stevens has now won five-straight games dating back to September 7 and is 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the Empire 8. The Ducks are 3-0 on the road.

Stevens completed dominated the stat-sheet, ending the contest with a 22-2 margin in penalty corners, a 43-6 edge in shots and a 33-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Freshman Emily Stukenborg (Stockholm, N.J.) made one save to earn the win in goal, while her counterpart, freshman Katie Lass (Cherry Hill, N.J.), denied 30 Stevens attempts in an excellent performance for the Bombers (6-2 overall, 1-1 Empire 8).

Senior forward Marguerite Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.) put the Ducks on the board in the 10th minute, recording her second penalty-stroke goal in as many outings. It was her ninth marker of the season and came when a Stevens shot hit a defenders foot after a scuffle in front.

Rachel Chavez recorded her first of the day and second of the season late in the first half thanks to a helper from sophomore midfielder Erin Silvestri (Beverly, Mass.). The play came on a penalty corner in which Silvestri took a shot from the top of the circle and Chavez re-directed it in,

Ithaca answered moments later, and the two teams went into the locker room with the scoreboard showing Stevens 2, Ithaca 1.

Rachel Chavez tallied again 10:23 into the second period to put the Ducks on top 3-1, seemingly pushing the game out of reach for an Ithaca team that was struggling to generate any kind of offensive attack. Chavez was in the right spot at the right time, hammering home a rebound after a Lass save.

The Bombers were able to score their second goal on just their third shot on net of the afternoon with 13:59 on the clock, but Stevens was able to maintain possession and do enough defensively to seal the team's fifth-straight win and second in the conference. The Ducks were also able to ward off an Ithaca penalty corner as time expired.

"We played some really good hockey today but continue to have trouble executing on both circles," Head Coach Emily Beach (Hoboken, N.J.) said after the win. "I have to credit Ithaca's fight and the play of their goalkeeper. They played a tough game and we feel fortunate to come away with a win."

The Ducks will return to action on Wednesday night when they visit the top-ranked Montclair State University Red Hawks at 7 p.m.
