MASON, Ohio (November
22, 2014) – Junior Amy Regan became the fourth national champion in Stevens Institute of Technology history Saturday with a first place finish in the NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championship.

Regan bested a field of nearly 300 runners from 32 different institutions to capture her first career cross country national championship.

"This national title for Amy is a result of so many things," head coach Justin Wood said. "It starts with her amazing work ethic and pure love for running. Through hard work and learning from experiences she slowly developed into a national caliber runner."

Regan ran a 20:51.9 race to put her 6.8 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. With the men's race having been run prior to the women's, Regan and the field were forced to battle with muddy and slippery conditions. By the halfway point Regan had built a 10 second lead, but Washington University's Lucy Cheadle was able to close the gap by the 5k mark.

Both runners ran side-by-side until there was 600 meters to go where Regan increased the pace to a point Cheadle couldn't keep up with.

"We had talked about working really hard all the way to the finish and that's exactly what she did," said Wood.

With the win, Regan capped a remarkable season that saw her capture first place finishes in all eight races she competed in.

"There is really no better way I could've asked for this season to end," Regan said. "Winning a national title has been something I have been working towards all season. I felt extremely prepared for this race and it was just as challenging as we thought it would be.  I'm so thankful for the support from the entire Stevens athletics community, it made the win even more meaningful."

MORE FROM COACH WOOD
"The support for her and the program has been incredible. Our own athletes have really bought in to this program and she has received a ton of support from other Stevens teams and even other rival schools. Today proves that cross country can be done at Stevens and it can be at the highest level."
