HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 15, 2014) – The nationally ranked No. 12 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team won its fifth consecutive match of the season with a sweep of Hunter College on Saturday in Canavan Arena. Stevens is now 6-3 on the year, while Hunter falls to 3-5.
The Ducks breezed through the first set, 25-12, and outhit the Hawks, .677 to -.045. After ties at 4-4 and 6-6, Stevens closed out the opener on a 19-6 run and tallied the final seven points by way of kill, block or ace. Sophomore
Chris Vaughan (Medford, N.J.) paced the Ducks in set one with three kills, while sophomores
Alexander Carpenter (Delaware, Ohio) and
Thomas Wright (La Mesa, Calif.) and freshman
Gabe Shankweiler (Allenton, Pa.) each recorded two. Stevens registered five total blocks in the first set as well.
In the second set, Stevens held a 12-6 advantage after two points were taken away from the Hawks due to service rotation violations. Hunter then came back to within two at 13-11 and forced the Ducks to call a timeout. After the break, Hunter recorded four of the next five points to gain a 15-14 edge. The set would witness a 15-15 deadlock and the Hawks would then go up by as many as five, 23-18. Stevens fought back to tie the set at 23-23 and earned the victory on a dual block from Vaughan and junior
Daniel Smith (Tucson, Ariz.), 26-24.
Stevens fell behind early in the third set, 4-3, but never trailed again after the ensuing point went to the Ducks. After three consecutive kills by Vaughan made the score, 6-4, Stevens tallied nine of the next 12 points to take a commanding 15-7 lead. Hunter got back to 17-14, but the Ducks closed out the sweep with an 8-3 run to conclude the final set by a score of 25-17.
Vaughan led all players with 15 kills and hit .500 overall in the match to go along with six digs, four blocks and three service aces. Shankweiler added seven kills with seven digs.
Junior
Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) handed out 20 assists with six digs. Sophomore
John Eddins (Kula, Hawaii) and freshman
Scott Russell (Newport Beach, Calif.) subbed in at the setter position and combined for 11 more assists (six from Eddins, five from Russell).
Freshman
Jordan Stuart (Huntington Beach, Calif.) played the final set and chipped in four kills on five swings with no errors. Junior
Dylan Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.) registered a team-best eight digs.
The Ducks travel to No. 3 SUNY New Paltz on February 19 for a United Volleyball Conference match at 7 p.m. New Paltz is 12-1 on the season and 4-0 in the UVC with two matches on its schedule today.
