Men’s Basketball to Host Elmira Friday for Senior Night

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 19, 2014)
 – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team will host Elmira College Friday night at 6 p.m. in the Canavan Arena. Prior to the tip-off, Stevens will honor its senior class in guards Phillip DeSeignora (Boston, Mass.), Andrew Meszaros (Phoenixville, Pa.) and Matt Skrelja (Clark, N.J.) along with forward Max Schwartz (Bridgewater, N.J.). The Ducks will also recongnize senior student assist Kevin McManamy (Charlotte, N.C.) who has been an integral part of the program since 2009-10.
 
Stevens comes into the game at 9-4 in the Empire 8 and 16-8 overall. The Ducks have clinched a spot in the conference tournament but need to defeat Elmira and receive help if they want to host the conference tournament as the No. 1 seed.
 
Two weeks ago, Stevens came back from 20 points down to defeat the Soaring Eagles, 60-58. Elmira is currently 10-13 overall and 5-7 in the Empire 8.
 
The Ducks are tied with Hartwick College and Nazareth College at 9-4 in the conference but Hartwick holds that head-to-head tiebreaker. Alfred University is fourth in the conference standings and St. John Fisher College is fifth.

Stevens is currently 34th nationally and second in the conference in assists and 37th in assists per game. The Ducks are No. 50 in steals per game and 51st in total steals.
 
Skrelja leads the conference in assists per game (5.2) and is 34th nationally. He is 23rd in the nation and No. 2 in the conference in total steals and No. 1 in the conference and No. 14 nationally in steals per game (2.62). Junior forward Patrick Sabatino (Westfield, N.J.) is 57th in blocked shots per game (1.91) and second in the E8.
 
The Ducks are ranked fifth in the East Region in the second of four Regional Rankings released by the NCAA. Stevens had an in-region mark of 14-7 at the time of the rankings. Brockport is No. 1 in the East, Plattsburgh is No. 2, Geneseo is third and Hobart is fourth.
