No. 4 Tufts Handles Men’s Lacrosse, 23-12

MEDFORD, Mass. (March 11, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team dropped a 23-12 non-conference decision to nationally ranked No. 4 Tufts University on Tuesday afternoon at Bello Field in Medford, Mass.

Stevens (1-4) led 3-2 over the opening 7:19 of the contest, but was outscored, 10-3 the rest of the first half and went into the break trailing by a 13-6 deficit. This is the fourth time in the past three seasons that Stevens and Tufts have faced off, with the Jumbos winning all four matchups.

Freshman Connor Towne (San Jose, Calif.) netted the Ducks' first goal of the game at the 11:28 mark of the first quarter. Junior Michael Maroon (Virginia Beach, Calif.) took a pass from senior Charlie Cronin (Northampton, Mass.) three minutes later to tie the matchup at 2-2. Just 46 seconds later, Stevens took its only lead of the ballgame on a goal from freshman Connor McKeon (Branchburg, N.J.) that was assisted by sophomore Andrew Scrutchfield (Lewes, Del.).

Tufts (3-0) tallied the next three goals in less than a three-minute span to go ahead, 5-3, with just over four minutes remaining in the first quarter. Stevens snapped the Jumbos' string less than a minute later on the final goal of the period by Maroon, assisted by McKeon.

The Jumbos blew to game open in the second quarter, outscoring the Ducks, 8-2, and then picked up five more goals in the third quarter to just one from Stevens to turn a close 5-4 game after the first quarter into an 18-7 rout.

Both teams scored five goals in the fourth quarter.

Cronin netted a man-up goal in the second quarter off an assist from junior JP Giroux (Ashburn, Va.). Sophomore Colin Sawula (Northampton, Mass.) also scored in the second period on an unassisted tally.

Stevens' lone goal of the third quarter came man-up from sophomore Matt Ferentini (South Salem, N.Y.) on the second assist from Giroux. In the fourth quarter, sophomore Michael Serrante (Bridgewater, N.J.) found the back of the net three times, while Cronin and Ferentini scored once. Giroux, Cronin and Maroon assisted on three of the fourth quarter goals.

Freshman Kevin Rafferty (Bay Shore, N.Y.) stopped 17 shots in all 60 minutes of action in a losing effort.

Sophomore Brett Incollingo (Yardley, Pa.) won 17-of-28 face-offs and picked up nine groundballs to lead all players in both categories.

Stevens plays No. 8 Denison University next on March 15 at 1 p.m. in Towson, Md.
