FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 11, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team dropped a 3-0 game to Bridgewater State University, before losing 4-0 to University of Pittsburgh-Bradford on Tuesday in the Gene Cusic Classic. The losses evened the Ducks record at 3-3.

Stevens co-captains junior Noelle Mulligan and sophomore Gavriella Risman-Jones added two hits each in both games. The Ducks two opposing starters came into the games with a combined 5-0 record and sub 1.00 ERA.

Bridgewater 3, Stevens 0

Bridgewater threatened in the first after leadoff hitter Jacelyn Bettencourt walked, reached second on a ground-out, and went to third on an error. Senior Kayla Berardi worked out of the trouble though thanks to two line-drive catches from senior Danielle DeFeo at short to end the threat.

After the Ducks went down in order in their half of the first and second, Bridgewater finally broke through in the third with a two-run double from Jess Laudati to score Karissa Pagan and Becky Percuoco. Stevens tried to answer in the bottom of the inning after junior Noelle Mulligan singled with one out, but were unable to get her around to score. Bridgewater added another in the fifth off Laudati's second double of the game.

Stevens rallied in the sixth when after Berardi was hit by a pitch with one out, senior Danielle DeFeo walked.  Sophomore Gavriella Risman-Jones singled to right, but Berardi was thrown out at home on the hit, followed by a ground-out from junior Jamie DeGennaro to end the inning.

The Ducks threatened again in the seventh when freshman Kelly Klewicki worked a lead-off work, followed by a single from freshman Jessica Rees, but Bridgewater pitcher Amber White retired the next three to end the game.

White came into the game with a 3-0 record and had yet to give up an earned run all season. Berardi continues to pitch well her her come-back season, allowing just two earned runs and striking-out four over seven innings of work.

The win moved Bridgewater's record to 4-3.

Pitt-Bradford 4, Stevens 0

Pitt-Bradford jumped out to a lead in the second when Jillian Fleming singled to lead-off, and later scored off a throwing error. Then in the fourth, Leann Bell led off with a double, followed by a triple off the bat of Heidi Lucke to put the Panthers up 2-0. A single in the inning from Ang Comilla extended the lead to 3-0, but Stevens starter junior Brianna Sandone induced a ground-ball out to get out of the inning, starding two more runners.

The Ducks battled back in the fifth when Spitz singled with one out, but two straight strike-outs killed the rally. Pitt-Bradford added one more in the sixth before starter Sydney Mosby retired the final six hitters to seal the win.

The loss is the first of the young season for Sandone who consistently worked herself out of jams, stranding eight base runners over the course of seven innings.

Pitt-Bradford's senior starter Mosby came into the game with a 2-0 record and had given up just two runs in 14 innings with 15 strikeouts. The win evened Pitt-Bradford's record at 3-3.
