STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (March 22, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team split its CUNYAC doubleheader with the College of Staten Island on Saturday. Stevens took Game One, 2-1, but fell in the nightcap, 3-2.
The Ducks are now 8-3 overall and 4-2 in the CUNYAC, while Staten Island is 4-5 and 1-1.
Game One: Stevens 2, Staten Island 1
In the opener, sophomore
Greg Jakusik (The Woodlands, Texas) tossed a complete game with 11 strikeouts for his first win of the season. Jakusik scattered three hits with three walks and only allowed one runner to reach second base after the Dolphins scored in the bottom of the second inning. The southpaw also retired the side in order four times.
Senior
Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) delivers Stevens' game-winning hit in the fourth inning with a two-RBI single that scored junior
Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.) and sophomore
Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.).
In the frame, Yano drew a walk and moved up to third on a double by Mannello before Lowenstein stepped to the plate.
Senior
Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) doubled and walked in a 1-for-2 opener, while junior
Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.), sophomore
Nicholas Sieber (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and freshman
Michael Mule' (Boca Raton, Fla.) all recorded base hits.
Game Two: Staten Island 3, Stevens 2
The Dolphins scored a pair of runs in their first at bat of the contest and held onto their lead until Stevens plated one in the third and fifth innings to knot the game at 2-2. Staten Island answered in the bottom of the fifth to salvage the split.
Mannello drove in both runs for the Ducks on two hits in four trips to the plate. In the third, Mannello's single brought Yano home and his bases loaded knock scored Hennelly in the fifth.
In the fifth, Hennelly led off the inning with a double before Allen reached on a walk and Yano followed with a single. After Mannello drove in the equalizer, Stevens' next three hitters were retired in order.
The Ducks had a chance to force extra innings with runners on the corners and one out. Stevens was unsuccessful on a squeeze attempt for the second out and flew out to end Game Two.
Yano picked up three hits in the night cap, while junior
Marc Calleo (Bayville, N.J.) batted 2-for-4.
Junior
Peirce Marston (Silver Spring, Md.) suffered the loss in 4.2 innings pitched. Marston surrendered seven hits and struck out five with three earned runs. Senior
Mark Poinsett (Ocean Gate, N.J.) and junior
Gary Boardman (Staten Island, N.Y.) each threw 2/3 innings and gave up one hit apiece.
