MADISON, N.J. (March 27, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team scored 26 total runs on Wednesday in a doubleheader sweep over Farleigh Dickinson University, College at Florham (10-6).
The win is the fifth in a row for the Ducks as they moved to 10-4.
Stevens 9, FDU 1
The Ducks scored early on FDU freshman pitcher Amanda Finn. In the first, senior
Danielle DeFeo led-off the game with a single, and reached second off sophomore
Gavriella Risman-Jones' sacrifice bunt. After junior
Jamie DeGennaro flied-out, freshman
Kelly Klewicki picked up an RBI, singling home DeFeo.
Senior pitcher
Kayla Berardi held the one-run-edge in the bottom of the inning after working around a lead-off walk, allowing Stevens to add to their lead in the second. With two outs, Berardi legged-out a single to short where a throwing error from senior Maggie Murphy allowed junior
Noelle Mulligan to score. Risman-Jones continued the rally in the third with a lead-off double, and scored off a single from freshman
Jessica Rees.
Stevens continued its one-run scoring streak with another in the fourth. Freshman
Gina Schnecker pinch-ran for senior
Stephanie Senkevich at third, and scored off a DeFeo single to left to extend the lead to 4-0. FDU answered in the bottom of the inning with a lead-off home run off the bat of sophomore Nikki Caruso, but the Ducks responded loudly with five runs in the seventh.
With two outs, Rees doubled-home DeGennaro and later scored off an error in right field off Senkevich's bat that also scored sophomore
Sydney Spitz. Mulligan followed-suit with a triple to score Senkevich before Berardi finished-off the scoring with a single to left to score Mulligan. The runs were plenty for Berardi who retired the side in order in the seventh to polish off the win.
The win was the fourth of the year for Berardi who tallied seven strikeouts and saw her ERA fall to 0.81. Offensively, Rees led the team with two RBIs while DeFeo, DeGennaro, Spitz, and Berardi all also added two hits each in a game that saw seven Stevens starters score.
Stevens 17, FDU 6
The Ducks continued their hot hitting in the first when DeGennaro blasted a two-run home run to center to score DeFeo who had led-off the game with a walk. Rees followed it up with a single, and later scored off a wild-pitch to give Stevens an early 3-0 lead.
FDU showed some power of its own with sophomore Jenna Appello's solo home run in the bottom of the first, but the Ducks responded with three more in the second. After DeFeo and Risman-Jones singled to lead-off and advanced on a wild pitch, Rees tripled to center, then scored on a wild pitch to extend the Stevens lead to 6-1.
The Devils came right back though in the second when senior Toni-ann Canova and sophomore Jaclyn Herrington hit back-to-back singles to lead-off. Canova later scored off an error in right field before FDU sliced the deficit in half with a double from senior Maggie Murphy to score Herrington. After holding Stevens scoreless in the third, FDU added one more in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from sophomore Wynne McCann.
After seeing their lead cut to two, the Ducks exploded for six runs in the fourth. Klewicki singled to lead-off and scored off a single from Senkevich. Mulligan and freshman
Emily Sellitti followed with back-to-back RBI singles to extend the lead to five before an error from the pitcher allowed another run to score. Rees grounded-out for the second out of the inning, but scored DeFeo to give Stevens an 11-4 lead. The Ducks added one more when Risman-Jones scored off a wild pitch.
Berardi promptly pitched a scoreless fourth in relief for junior
Brianna Sandone, allowing the Ducks to extend their lead with five more runs in the fifth. With two-runs already in, Risman-Jones singled to center to score two, followed by a two-RBI single from sophomore
Oriana DeFeo-Peterson. Schnecker capped the scoring with an RBI single to third to score Rees, ballooning the Stevens lead to 17-4. FDU came-back with two, but they weren't enough to prevent the run-rule from ending the game after five.
Every Stevens player who batted registered a hit, while four different players had multiple RBIs. DeFeo led the team with four hits, and the three RBIs from Rees are a new career high. The win was the sixth of the year for Sandone.
