UNIONDALE, N.Y. (March 8, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team dropped a 10-5 decision to No. 2 SUNY Cortland on Saturday at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, N.Y. Cortland netted five third quarter goals to break a 2-2 tie at halftime.
Stevens (1-3) led, 2-1, after the first quarter on goals from sophomore
Tim Fair (West Deptford, N.J.) with 9:03 on the clock and junior
Charlie Cronin (Northampton, Mass.) on a man-up chance with 5:29 to go. Cortland (4-0) got on the board with just over two minutes remaining in the period. Junior
Michael Maroon (Virginia Beach, Va.) assisted on the Cronin score.
The Red Dragons knotted the game up at 2-2 midway through the second quarter to account for all the offense in the first 30 minutes.
Cortland ripped off four quick goals to start the third quarter to turn a deadlocked matchup into a four-goal differential less than five minutes into the third period. The Red Dragons scored at 12:23, 12:12, 11:38 and 10:34 in the frame before Stevens could end Cortland's string of goals.
Maroon got the Ducks back on the board at the 8:19 mark of the third off a pass from senior
Sean Scrudato (Westfield, N.J.) to get back to within three goals.
Cortland answered right back two minutes later to take its four-goal edge into the final quarter of play.
In the fourth, Cortland struck first four minutes in and then freshman
Connor Towne (San Jose, Calif.) netted an unassisted tally just 30 seconds later. The Red Dragons regained their four-point cushion, 9-4, with 8:18 left in regulation until sophomore
Matt Ferentini (South Salem, N.Y.) put in a man-up goal off a pass from classmate
Andrew Scrutchfield (Lewes, Del.) two minutes later.
Cortland put the last goal of the game home with 2:14 on the clock.
Freshman
Kevin Rafferty (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made 13 saves in a losing effort and stopped nine shots in the first half.
Stevens was outshot, 44-24, and lost the battle at the face-off "X", 11 to eight. The Ducks converted on 16-of-24 clears, while Cortland was successful on 17-of-22 tries. The groundball statline was nearly even, as Stevens prevailed, 33-31.
The five goals scored is the lowest offensive output for a Stevens team since Cortland held the Ducks to three goals in 2011.
Stevens head to No. 4 Tufts University on March 11 for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
