ELMIRA, N.Y. (March 9, 2014) – The nationally ranked No. 7 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team dropped its second straight United Volleyball Conference match to No. 9 Nazareth College in the final crossover of 2014 at Elmira College on Sunday.
Stevens (12-7, 6-4) went 1-2 over the weekend and actually outscored Nazareth (12-5, 10-1), 93-91, in the setback. The Golden Flyers narrowly prevailed, 25-22, 15-25, 25-22, 26-24, and outhit the Ducks, .280 to .258. Stevens remained close throughout due to 17 service errors from Nazareth.
Freshman
Gabe Shankweiler (Allentown, Pa.) recorded a match-best 18 kills with a .333 hitting percentage and nine digs. Sophomore
Chris Vaughan (Medford, N.J.) put down 13 kills to go along with nine digs and a pair of blocks.
Junior
Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) handed out 42 assists and completed his double-double with 11 digs to lead the Ducks.
Sophomore
Alexander Carpenter (Delaware, Ohio) swung at a .500 clip with nine kills in 16 tries. Junior
Daniel Smith (Tucson, Ariz.) added seven kills, four blocks and three service aces.
Stevens concludes conference play with a match against sixth-ranked MIT on March 22 in Canavan Arena at 2 p.m.
