ResultsHOBOKEN, N.J. (April 13, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team won the top three singles matches on Sunday, but dropped the overall match to No. 26 Skidmore College 5-4.
The loss evened the Ducks record at 9-9, while Skidmore moved to 8-6.
Stevens started the match off well with an 8-3 win at third doubles for sophomores
Ben Foran and
Tyler Tisdale over sophomore Jonah Epstein and senior Gabe Steerman. Skidmore bounced-back with an 8-5 win at No. 1 for seniors Jimmy Sherpa and Oliver Loutsenko, before taking the doubles edge with a tiebreaker win in the second for sophomore Nick Tong and junior Alec Hoblitzell over the freshman duo of
Charles Drake and
Michael Feldman.
Heinrich tied the match for Stevens with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sherpa at No. 1 to start the singles matches, but Skidmore came right back with a win at No. 6 for Epstein over freshman
Brett Derrington, 6-3, 6-2. Skidmore extended the lead with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 before Stevens mounted a furious comeback.
Needing a win, Foran got the job done with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 over junior Miles Ransom to cut the Ducks deficit to 4-3. Feldman followed-suit with a win at No. 3 in which he won the second set in a tiebreaker, setting up a winner take-all scenario at fourth singles.
Drake dropped the first set 6-4 to Steerman before coming-back from a 5-3 deficit in the second to win 7-5. With the match tied, Drake made-up at 3-0 deficit to make the match 3-2, but Steerman rallied to finish off the 6-2 win to clinch the match for Skidmore.
The Ducks will have the week off from competition before returning to Empire 8 play on April 19 when they host Hartwick College and Utica College at 12 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. respectively.
