Box Score 2 HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 22, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team outscored Hunter College 15-3 on Tuesday in a doubleheader sweep comprised of a 5-1 win in game one and a 10-2 win in game two.
The wins moved Stevens' record to 25-9 while Hunter dropped to 9-18.
Stevens 5, Hunter 1 Senior pitcher
Kayla Berardi retired the side in order in the first and second with three strikeouts before Stevens built its lead in the second. With runners at first and second, senior
Danielle DeFeo singled to score one, followed by a single from sophomore
Gavriella Risman-Jones to score two more.
Berardi worked around a two-out single in the third before the Ducks rallied again in the bottom of the inning. With freshman
Jessica Rees on second after a single and sophomore
Sydney Spitz on first, senior
Stephanie Senkevich hit an infield single to load the bases. Hunter sophomore hurler Sarah Beck recovered though, striking-out Berardi to end the inning.
Hunter took advantage by adding a run in the fourth off a wild pitch. Stevens failed to answer in the fifth, but put the game away in the sixth with some insurance.
After Risman-Jones singled-home junior
Noelle Mulligan with an infield single, junior
Jamie DeGennaro ripped a double to right-center to add one more. Hunter rallied with runners at first and third and no-one out in the seventh, but Berardi answered with a strike-out, while DeGennaro threw-out a stealing runner at second then ended the game by picking-off the runner at third.
Risman-Jones led the Ducks offensively with three RBIs off two hits while Berardi struck-out 10 to earn her fourteenth win of the season.
Stevens 10, Hunter 2 Hunter struck first with one run in the top of the first, but Stevens quickly answered with five in their half of the inning. With one run already in, freshman
Emily Sellitti doubled-home Risman-Jones to give Stevens a 2-1 edge. Sellitti later scored on a wild pitch before freshman
Gina Schnecker walked with the bases-loaded to add another run. Freshman
Kelly Klewicki followed by scoring on a wild-pitch to cap the scoring.
Junior pitcher
Meagan Lorenz worked around an infield error to pitch a scoreless second, allowing the Ducks to add to their lead in their half of the second. Sellitti scored on a wild-pitch before senior
Stephanie Senkevich singled-home Rees. Mulligan drove in one more with a fielder's choice ground-out, followed by a DeFeo RBI single to increase the lead to eight.
Both teams traded zeroes in the third and fourth before Hunter scored their second run of the game in the fifth, but Stevens came-back with one of their own to end the game. With Risman-Jones on second, Rees crushed an RBI double to left to give the Ducks an eight-run-lead and the win.
In a truly team effort, eight different players drove in a run while Sellitti led all players with three hits. Risman-Jones, Sellitti, Rees, and Klewicki each scored multiple runs, and Lorenz picked-up her second win of the season.
