PITTSFORD, N.Y. (April 5, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team had its four-game winning streak snapped by St. John Fisher College, 7-5, in an Empire 8 Conference game on Saturday in Pittsford, N.Y. With the loss, Stevens is now 5-6, 2-1 on the season, while Fisher improves to 5-4 and 2-1 in the Empire 8.

The Ducks led, 4-1, after the first quarter but only scored once over the final 45 minutes of play. After Fisher scored with 9:34 left in the opening period, the Cardinals tallied six consecutive goals before Stevens could get back on the board with just over 10 minutes left in regulation.

From Stevens' last goal, three shots by the Ducks were saved and two others hit a post.

Sophomore Matt Ferentini (South Salem, N.Y.) netted the game's opening goal 4:10 into the contest. The Cardinals then tied the ballgame up on a man-up score before sophomore Colin Sawula (Northampton, Mass.) put in an unassisted score at the 5:34 mark of the first. Senior Charlie Cronin (Northampton, Mass.) then gave Stevens a 3-1 lead a minute later and junior Michael Maroon (Virginia Beach, Va.) picked up a goal after the ensuing faceoff which was assisted by Cronin to conclude the offense in the first 15 minutes.

Neither team tallied a goal over a 14-minute span until Fisher's David Haseley cut Fisher's deficit to 4-2 with just over five minutes left in the second quarter. Just one minute later, the Cardinals found the back of the net again to make the game a 4-3 difference which was the outcome at halftime.

Stevens took the only two shots in the contest over the final 4:14 of the second period.

In the third, Fisher knotted the scoreboard at 4-4 with 12:57 remaining in the frame. After another nine-minute scoring drought by both teams, the Cardinals took their first and final lead of the game with 3:45 left on the clock. Fisher then built a two-goal edge 29 seconds later and closed out the third quarter with another score with just one second left on the clock.

Sophomore Andrew Scrutchfield (Lewes, Del.) notched a man-up goal off a pass from Ferentini to jump start the Ducks' comeback attempt, but were never able to continue the momentum to climb back into the game.

The Ducks did, however, outshoot Fisher, 46-26, in the game. Groundballs and faceoff wins were even at 25-25 and eight-to-eight, as were clears – 14-for-18 for Stevens and 14-for-19 for Fisher. Stevens committed just nine turnovers, while Fisher turned the ball over 17 times.

Sophomore Brett Incollingo (Yardley, Pa.) won 5-of-8 faceoffs and scooped up a pair of groundballs, while classmate Jeff Wyckoff (Summit, N.J.) claimed 3-of-8 tries at the "X" with two groundballs. Senior Tim Culloty (Mahwah, N.J.) led all players with five groundballs and caused three turnovers.

Freshman Kevin Rafferty (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made nine saves in a losing effort between the pipes in all 60 minutes of action.

The Ducks will look to redeem the loss against Houghton College on April 12 at 11 a.m. at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
