Women’s Basketball Opens Season Sunday

HOBOKEN, N.J. (NOVEMBER 13, 2015) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team opens its season with a road contest against No. 5 New York University Sunday.

BACK AT IT
Senior Kaitlyn Astel was named a d3hoops.com preseason All-American earlier this month, and led the Ducks in both scoring and rebounding last year. Astel also collected Empire 8 Conference Player of the Year honors, becoming the first Stevens player since Dani Dudek in 2007-08 to win that award. Teams will be keying in to stop Astel from scoring, so secondary scoring for Stevens will be important.

Fellow seniors Miranda Ripken and Dylan Krause are the floor leaders and have been four year starters. They have helped construct the program to where it is today, and hope to end their careers on a high note. Megan Petuskey is a three point threat, and her ability to be a post player who can shoot from outside makes her tough to guard.

THREE'S COMPANY
The Ducks welcome back a trio of juniors in 2015-16. Erica Guketlov has refined her game this offseason, and improved her on the defensive end as well as her floor vision. Guketlov can knock down three-pointers but also can shoot the mid-range jumper. Daphne Ginn is another point guard who can shoot the three. Ginn is a relentless defender, and her feisty play can help force turnovers. Ruth Waters is an all-around player who will see minutes off the bench.

SOPHOMORE FOUR
Anna Toke and Megan Brown will both see time at the final starting spot this season. Toke battled back from an ACL injury last winter and recorded double-digit rebounds in three of the final four games last season, while Brown has the ability to guard both post and perimeter players. Sydney Darby should be the first guard off the bench, and is a threat from long range. Brooke Stoddard adds good interior defense, and boasts a strong basketball IQ.

NEW TO THE FOLD
The program welcomes a pair of freshman to the unit this year in Elena Sanchez and Megan Anderson.
