Box ScoreNEW YORK, N.Y. (February 4, 2015) – No. 24 New York University defeated Stevens Institute of Technology by a score of 22-19 Wednesday night at the Coles Sports Center in a Centennial Conference wrestling match.
With the win, the Violets improve to 6-0 in the conference and 16-3 overall. Stevens falls to 11-6 overall and 4-2 in the conference, seeing its four-match winning streak snapped.
The Ducks will return to action Saturday when they square off with conference rivals McDaniel College and Washington & Lee University.
Stevens was able to overcome an early 12-3 deficit, running off 13-straight points to take a 16-12 lead after freshman
AJ Kowal earned a win by fall 4:36 into his match at 174. The win marks the fifth-straight bout Kowal has earned a victory via fall and he has also won his last 10 individual bouts. NYU responded, outscoring the Ducks 10-0 in the next two weight classes – 184 and 197 pounds – to head into the heavyweight matchup leading 22-16.
At 285, senior
Chris Florek did all he could to win by fall, but had to settle on a 9-5 decision victory which made the final margin of 22-19 in favor of the hosts. Florek has won seven-straight bouts and now has a record of 25-7 on the year.
Sophomore
Rob Murray opened the day with a 3-0 shutout of Wayne Yuan at 125 pounds, but the Violets answered with three-straight wins for the 12-3 lead. Senior
Mike Polizzi followed with a major decision (10-2) for his 16th win in a row, and senior
CJ Caserta pulled the Ducks within two (12-10) with a decision at 165 pounds. Caserta is on a personal seven-match winning streak, already tallying 13 falls on the year. His 38 career falls is a new Stevens record.
