Ithaca, N.Y. – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team collected 86.5 points on the first day of the Region II Championships, with nine competitors earning All-Region honors and five still alive in their quest to earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships.
The Ducks are just 7.5 points back of the host Bombers, and sit 19 points clear of any other team, with more wrestlers (nine) still alive than any of the other 19 competing schools.
THE RUNDOWN
Nico Diaz (141),
Cole Handlovic (149), and
Ryan Smith (157) all lived up to their No. 1 seeds in their respective classes. Diaz posted wins by major decision and technical fall; Handlovic posted two wins by major decision (conceding three total points); Smith earned a first-period fall and a major decision win.
Tyler Roe was the only Duck to collect three victories on Friday, as the No. 6 seed at 165 picked up two technical falls and a major decision.
Ian Flanagan clocked the final 2-0 day for the Ducks, earning a major decision win and a decision win as the No. 4 seed at 174.
The 125-lb. No. 5 seed,
Charles Piccione wrestled three decisions, picking up two wins, including his final match of the day in the consolation bracket.
Noah MacIlroy, the 184-lb. No. 4 seed, opened his day with a decision win and ended it with a major decision in the consolation draw.
Terrence Thomas was knocked to the consolation bracket after his first match of the day, but the No. 11 seed at 197 earned All-Region status with wins by major decision and decision.
After opening his day with a decision win,
Noah Berlin-Langston, the No. 8 seed at heavyweight suffered a loss via pin to the draw's No. 1 seed, but rebounded with a technical fall in his first match in the consolation draw.
At 133 lbs., No. 21
Vincent Principe faced three Top-7 opponents, picking up a technical fall win before being eliminated from the competition.
