Box Score 2 HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 29, 2015) –Sophomore
Michael Mule' delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the tenth inning to help the Ducks earn a split with Utica College on Sunday.
Game 1- Utica 3, Stevens 2 Utica drew first blood in the top of the first innings, taking advantage of a pair of errors. The Ducks answered in the bottom half as junior
Jonathan Toro led off the game with a single to right field and came around to score on a long double to left by classmate
Jayson Yano.
The Pioneers took the lead back in the top of the fourth inning when junior Matthew DeMartino hit a solo home run to right field. They added another run after junior Bryce Patterson reached on a bunt single and moved into scoring on a wild pitch. Junior leadoff hitter Adam Pexton then delivered a double down the right field line to score Patterson. Stevens threatened in the bottom of the sixth after junior
Zeph Walters and freshman
Alex Detweiler had singles to put runners on the corners and two outs but junior Joshua Webb recorded a strikeout to end the inning.
The Ducks (8-8) pushed for the comeback in the bottom of the seventh after junior
John Sideris led off with a pinch hit single to right center. After senior
Ryan Mannello came on as a pinch runner, he advanced to third after a pair of groundouts. Toro drove him and with a single right back through the box and moved to second on a single by sophomore
Michael Mule'. But Webb stranded them there, inducing a fly ball to center to end game one.
Toro went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Yano reached base twice. Freshman
Andrew Hamel struck out four in three innings of relief while senior
Gary Boardman fanned four in four innings.
Patterson went 2-for-3 for the Pioneers while Webb tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts and only one walk.
Game 2: Stevens 4, Utica 3 (10 innings) The two sides traded zeros for the first five innings, as Detweiler and senior Ryan Watson combined to allow three baserunners. In the top of the sixth, the Pioneers (8-3) notched the first two runs on a two-out, two-run single by freshman Andrew Hobika, Jr. Stevens broke up the no-hit bid in the bottom of the sixth as sophomore
Harrison Kaye reached on an infield single and took second on a throwing error by the shortstop. Toro was hit by a pitch and the Ducks loaded the bases after a single by Mule'. Kaye came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Walters. After a hit batsman reloaded the bases, Detweiler helped his own cause by driving in a run to knot the score at two by beating out an infield single.
Utica scratched a run across in the top of the eighth after a leadoff walked to sophomore Jerred Beniquez who promptly swiped second. After a sac bunt advanced him to third, he was driven in on a double by Hobika, Jr. The Ducks quickly tied the score in the bottom half when Toro, who had led off with a ground rule double to left center, came around to score on a single by Walters.
A one-out single by Toro in the bottom of the tenth started the winning rally for the Ducks. He swiped second and was driven in by Mule' who delivered the walk-off single.
Toro finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a stolen base while Mule' recorded two hits to go along with the game-winning RBI. Detweiler fanned seven in seven and a third innings. Senior
Peirce Marston got win after throwing an inning of perfect relief.
Hobika, Jr, went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Watson scattered three hits in five and a third innings. William Winsman took the loss after pitching three and two thirds innings in relief.
Stevens is back in action taking on No. 7/6 Kean University in Union tomorrow at 3 p.m.
