RESULTSHOUGHTON, N.Y. (September 12, 2015) – Fueled by a singles sweep, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 win over Alfred University Saturday in Empire 8 Conference action.
The win moved Stevens to 2-1 while Alfred fell to 0-2. Due to weather concerns, the match was moved from Alfred to the indoor courts at Houghton College.
Freshman
Sydney Zoretic and sophomore
Katrina Guido got the Ducks winning started with an 8-1 win at second doubles, before the freshmen tandem of
Jill Hadwen and
Victoria Piskarev continued it with their own 8-1 win at No. 3. The win was the third of the season for Zoretic and Guido.
Alfred bounced-back with a tiebreaker win at No. 1, however it would all the scoring they would muster the rest of the day as the Ducks easily rolled through the singles portion of the match. Junior
Jillian Morneau tallied the Ducks first singles point with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6, followed by Zoretic's 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5.
Guignard and Guido continued the run with wins at No. 4 and No. 3 respectively, before Piskarev and Connor completed the sweep with two-set victories of their own.
With the wins, Guido and Guignard both stayed unbeaten at 3-0, while the wins were the first of the season for Connor and Zoretic.
The Ducks will continue their E8 road trip tomorrow with a 9 a.m. match at St. John Fisher College.
