Stevens Places 13th In Learfield Cup Standings

WESTLAKE, Ohio (June 9, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology Department of Athletics finished the year ranked No.13 nationally in the NACDA Learfield Directors' Cup standings.

The Ducks finished with 659.50 points, and were the top school in the Empire 8 Conference. Also, 659.50 points represented the most points in the state of New Jersey, and the 13th place finish equaled the highest in school history, also hit in 2010-11. Williams College won with 1098.25 while Washington University-St. Louis and Emory University rounded out the top three.

"I could not be prouder of our student-athletes, coaches and staff," said Director of Athletics and Recreation. "Earning a rank of 13th in the Learfield Directors' Cup is a tremendous honor for our athletic program and it is difficult to express the level of dedication and hard work put in by so many different people to make it happen. This is a very good day for everyone who is a part of the Stevens Athletics family."

Stevens was bolstered by strong showings during the second half of the spring season by the men's tennis and the women's outdoor track and field teams. Men's tennis finished 17th in the nation and garnered 50 points, while Amy Regan and Gladys Njoku combined for two national championships and three All-American honors during the outdoor season. The Ducks placed seventh at the Outdoor National Championships, gaining 72 points in the Learfield standings.

The fall season saw both men's and women's soccer along with field hockey advance to the NCAA Tournament, with women's soccer advancing to the Sectional Semifinals. The Ducks received points this winter from men's and women's swimming, men's and women's indoor track & field, and wrestling, all of which captured conference and national recognition.

The men's swim team captured the E8 championship, while the women took second as head coach Brad Thornton was named the women's coach of the meet. Nine swimmers combined from both the men's and women's programs qualified for NCAA Nationals.

Women's and men's track & field finished second and third respectively in the E8 this winter, and saw senior Amy Regan win national championships in the 5,000 meter and 3,000 meter. Additionally, senior Gladys Njoku took home the national title in the high jump for the second time in her career.

Wrestling won its second consecutive Centennial Conference Championship, before capturing the NCAA East Regional Championship in a record-setting performance. Led by sophomore A.J. Kowal's third-place finish, six Ducks qualified for nationals, while three earned All-American status.
