HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 25, 2017)  – Stevens Institute of Technology baseball coach
Kristaps Aldins has announced the addition of Robert Delaney to the coaching staff. Delaney will primarily work with the team's pitching staff and will serve as the program's recruiting coordinator.
"I am very excited to have Rob Delaney join our baseball family in time for the 2017 season," Aldins said. "Rob is an accomplished teacher of the game with experience at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels. His personality relates well to our student-athletes and I am looking forward to seeing him thrive as a Stevens Duck."
A veteran pitcher with eight years of professional playing experience, Delaney most recently served as an assistant varsity coach at Wayne Hills High School, where he primarily worked with the school's pitching staff, using his experience to create and implement throwing and conditioning programs.
"I want to thank Coach Aldins and [Athletic Director]
Russell Rogers for providing me an opportunity to be a part of the Stevens family," Delaney said. "The baseball program has been one of the top programs, in terms of consistency and winning, in recent years, and I am excited to be able to join the staff. I am anxious to get started working with the student athletes."
Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Minnesota Twins out of St. John's University, Delaney spent five seasons in the organization, where he was a multi-season All-Star and was named the MLB Class-A Relief Pitcher of the Year in 2007, after going 3-0 with a 1.03 ERA with 35 saves and 83 strikeouts between Class-A Beloit and Fort Myers. The River Vale, New Jersey native made his major league debut with the Twins on Sept. 4, 2010, facing five batters in an inning of work in Minnesota's 12-4 victory over the Texas Rangers.
After signing with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2011, Delaney was named Pitcher of the Year by the Triple-A Durham Bulls after registering a 4-2 mark in 51 games with a 1.86 ERA. While with the Bulls, he received a promotion to the majors, making four appearances and earning his first major league hold.Â
Following his time with the Rays organization, Delaney spent time with the Miami Marlins, Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organizations before retiring in 2013. After stepping away from the game as a player, he joined the staff of the Sag Harbor Whalers of the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League, serving as the team's pitching coach for one season.
A graduate of St. John's University with a degree in Sports Management, Delaney was Team Captain in 2006 and was also a Big East Academic All-Star.
