Women’s Tennis falls to Nazareth in thrilling E8 Championship match

  • Short Story: The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team came up just short in its quest for a first-ever Empire 8 Conference championship Saturday, falling in heartbreaking fashion to Nazareth College 5-4.

How It Happened
  • Stevens jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play.
  • Nazareth's Allison Friends and Marisa Joyce bested sophomore Nicole Badalyan and junior Sydney Zoretic at second doubles to give the Golden Flyers an early advantage. 
  • Stevens responded with consecutive victories at first and third doubles. Sophomores Isabella Calandra and Julia Earl returned to their winning ways with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles and the freshman tandem of Chelsea Braithwaite and Makenna Sargis closed doubles play with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
  • Freshman Makenna Sargis continued her outstanding inaugural season with a straight-set win at sixth singles.
  • Nazareth responded with three straight wins at third, fourth and fifth singles to take a 4-3 lead.
  • With the season on the line, Earl responded with a thrilling, come-from-behind win (3-6, 6-3, 7-5) at first singles.
  • With the teams tied at four, Nazareth's Maelah Nadeau rallied to defeat junior Victoria Piskarev (3-6, 6-4, 6-3) to close the match,
  • It was Nazareth's first Empire 8 Championship since 2002.
