POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (February 19, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team won six of its matches by an average margin of 18 Sunday, but was unable to top Johns Hopkins as the Ducks placed second at the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference Championships.
The one-day title fight took place on Vassar's campus in Poughkeepsie. Stevens topped Hunter 27-0, Yeshiva 22-5, CCNY 24-3, Drew 24-3, Haverford 22-5, and Vassar 16-11. Hopkins won 16-11 in the Ducks lone team loss.
The second-place finish denied Stevens' chance at three-peat after titles in 2014-15, and 2015-16.
Stevens enjoyed strong success individually however as junior
Abby Kaye won the individual title at foil en route to earning her 200th career win, and sophomore
Amanda Choy won at epee. Sophomore
Julie McEldoon also earned an individual honor with her 100th career win.
Freshman
Nicole Strezewski and
Allison Urban-Spillane each earned all-conference foil honors, while junior
Erin Hatcher and McEldoon joined Choy on the all-conference list at epee. Freshman
Phoebe Lai and sophomore
Michelle Drobish each earned all-conference honors at sabre as Drobish placed third.
Stevens' foil team took home top honors, while epee and sabre each placed second.
Kaye led all Stevens fencers with 20 wins, while Choy won 16 and Drobish won 14. At sabre, junior
Karen Kong, Yang and Lai each won at least 10 times, while Strezewski went 13-5 at foil. Hatcher finished 10-7 at epee, and McEldoon finished 11-5.
Stevens will return to the strips Tuesday night when it hosts NYU in a men's and women's combined meet.
