No. 21 Wrestling downs McDaniel and Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (January 20, 2018)  – Junior Joey Borai, senior Zach Wilhelm, and sophomores Troy Stanich and Dylan Van Sickell each won a pair of matches as No. 21 Stevens Institute of Technology Wrestling defeated McDaniel College (27-16) and Gettysburg College (25-21) Saturday at Bream Gymnasium in a pair of Centennial Conference duals.

The victories improved Stevens' dual record to 7-3.

"We came off a short week from Iowa and were missing some firepower, but our fans still expect the same result," commented head coach Joe Favia. "Every time out, we learn something new about this team and its individuals, then go home and make adjustments. We will do the same this week in preparation for USMMA."

"It's good to start the conference schedule with two wins, but we know we will be getting every team's best effort when we compete," Favia continued. "We are on to USMMA and looking forward to the opportunity to improve."

In the opener, Stevens won six of the first seven bouts to open a 27-6 lead en route to a 27-16 victory over McDaniel.

Borai began the event by pinning Jake Reid in 2:27 at 125 pounds. Stanich, the country's number-one ranked wrestler at 133 pounds, extended his unbeaten streak with 9-2 decision victory over Ryan Eckenbarger to push the Stevens lead to 9-0. McDaniel's Ronnie Wuest picked up a major decision victory over freshman Bruce Parola to end the Stevens run. Jake Poonton earned the Green Terror's second straight win with a 3-1 victory over freshman Colin Myles in the first sudden-victory period to close the Stevens advantage to 27-13. Freshman Joseph Moreno dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to Brendan Woody at 285 pounds to close out the scoring.

Against Gettysburg, the nationally-ranked Ducks earned wins in four of the first five bouts to build a 19-6 lead en route to a 25-21 victory.

Borai opened the scoring with a major decision victory over Lenny Ogozalek for his 21st win of the season. Stanich followed with a technical fall victory over Louie Carusillo for his 23rd consecutive win, to give Stevens a 9-0 lead. The hosting Bullets earned their first points of the dual with a forfeit win at 141 pounds.

Van Sickell earned his second major decision win of the day with a 13-5 victory over Colin Devlin to put Stevens up by four. The two majors pushed the Little Silver, New Jersey native's season total to 10. Wilhelm followed Van Sickell's performance with a second-period pin of Quinn Merrigan.

Gettysburg mounted a comeback with a technical fall at 165 pounds and a decision victory at 174 pounds to draw within 19-14.
