Dylan Van Sickell each won a pair of matches as No. 21 Stevens Institute of Technology Wrestling defeated McDaniel College (27-16) and Gettysburg College (25-21) Saturday at Bream Gymnasium in a pair of Centennial Conference duals.
The victories improved Stevens' dual record to 7-3.
"We came off a short week from Iowa and were missing some firepower, but our fans still expect the same result," commented head coach
Joe Favia. "Every time out, we learn something new about this team and its individuals, then go home and make adjustments. We will do the same this week in preparation for USMMA."
"It's good to start the conference schedule with two wins, but we know we will be getting every team's best effort when we compete," Favia continued. "We are on to USMMA and looking forward to the opportunity to improve."
In the opener, Stevens won six of the first seven bouts to open a 27-6 lead en route to a 27-16 victory over McDaniel.
Borai began the event by pinning Jake Reid in 2:27 at 125 pounds. Stanich, the country's number-one ranked wrestler at 133 pounds, extended his unbeaten streak with 9-2 decision victory over Ryan Eckenbarger to push the Stevens lead to 9-0. McDaniel would pick up a forfeit win at 141 pounds to pull within three at 9-6.Â
Van Sickell began a four-match run for the Ducks with a major decision victory at 149 pounds over DeAndre Tackett. Wilhelm, ranked third at 157 pounds, followed with a first-period pin of Cole Nagle to open a 19-6 lead. Senior
Josh Smith won by technical fall over Wade Bishop and sophomore
Carl Vasti won by decision over Ronald Mattox to close out the match-deciding stretch with Stevens holding a 27-6 lead.
McDaniel's Ronnie Wuest picked up a major decision victory over freshman
Bruce Parola to end the Stevens run. Jake Poonton earned the Green Terror's second straight win with a 3-1 victory over freshman
Colin Myles in the first sudden-victory period to close the Stevens advantage to 27-13. Freshman Joseph Moreno dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to Brendan Woody at 285 pounds to close out the scoring.
Against Gettysburg, the nationally-ranked Ducks earned wins in four of the first five bouts to build a 19-6 lead en route to a 25-21 victory.
Borai opened the scoring with a major decision victory over Lenny Ogozalek for his 21st win of the season. Stanich followed with a technical fall victory over Louie Carusillo for his 23rd consecutive win, to give Stevens a 9-0 lead. The hosting Bullets earned their first points of the dual with a forfeit win at 141 pounds.Â
Van Sickell earned his second major decision win of the day with a 13-5 victory over Colin Devlin to put Stevens up by four. The two majors pushed the Little Silver, New Jersey native's season total to 10. Wilhelm followed Van Sickell's performance with a second-period pin of Quinn Merrigan.
Gettysburg mounted a comeback with a technical fall at 165 pounds and a decision victory at 174 pounds to draw within 19-14. Parola earned a forfeit victory at 184 pounds to reclaim a nine-point lead for the guests. Mike Iodice earned a decision over Myles and No. 10 Paul Triandafilou won by major decision over Moreno at 285 pounds in the final bout of the day to conclude the scoring.
