Four-peat! No. 17 Wrestling wins fourth straight Centennial crown

LEXINGTON, Va. (February 10, 2018)  – No. 17 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling won six individual championships Saturday en route to the program's fourth straight Centennial Conference championship.

Junior Joey Borai (125 pounds), sophomore Troy Stanich (133 pounds), freshman Brett Kaliner (141 pounds), sophomore Dylan Van Sickell (149 pounds), senior Zach Wilhelm and junior Thomas Poklikuha were each victorious in their respective weight classes as Stevens amassed 100 points to win the championship by 38.5 points over United States Merchant Marine Academy. Stevens placed six wrestlers into the championship bouts and came away victorious in all six matches. Hosting Washington and Lee University (56.5 points), Gettysburg College (56 points) and Johns Hopkins University (51 points) rounded out the top five.

Wilhelm was named the championship's Outstanding Wrestler after collecting a pair of technical falls and a decision victory on his way to the 157-pound title. The Tuckerton, New Jersey native was also the recipient of the Chris Clifford Award, recognizing the wrestler with the most career points in the championship. 

The Ducks joined Ursinus College and Merchant Marine as programs winning four-straight Centennial Championships. Ursinus was first to pull off the feat, winning four straight from 2003-07 and Merchant Marine followed from 2008-11. 

Borai earned a fall over Muhlenberg's Cliff Cornell to open the event. The junior advanced to the championship bout with a 13-6 decision over Johns Hopkins' Christian Vallis. Borai then won the 125-pound title when Ursinus' Christopher Tan, the top seed in the division, was a medical forfeit.

At 133 pounds, Stanich, ranked as the top wrestler in the country at 133 pounds, remained perfect for the 2017-18 season with a pair of falls over McDaniel's Nicholas Malinowski and Ursinus' Ray Calderaio. The Roxbury, New Jersey native captured his second 133-pound title in as many years with a 6-2 decision over Hopkins' Ricky Cavallo, who was the second seed in the weight class. Stanich upped his record to 30-0 with 25 victories coming with bonus points.

Kaliner, ranked No. 4 in the country at 141 pounds, won his first individual Centennial title with an 8-4 victory over Washington and Lee's Zach Bylykbashi. The West Chester, Pennsylvania resident earned a fall over USMMA's Daniel May to open the competition and then advanced to the championship bout with a technical fall over Lucas Escobar. The tech fall was Kaliner's fourth of the year, which is tied for second on the team.

At 149 pounds, Van Sickell collected two first-period pins and a major decision victory to win the 149-pound title. The Little Silver, New Jersey native's first fall came at 1:01 over Ursinus' Donte McCarthy. Van Sickell advanced to the championship bout with a major decision over Johns Hopkins' Connor Joyce and then closed out his day with a pin of Bryce Crew at 2:36. Van Sickell has collected 11 pins on the year.

In a dominant performance at 165, Poklikuha earned two technical falls and a 4-0 decision to win the individual title. The West Creek, New Jersey native was a runner up at 157 in 2017. 

At 174, senior Josh Smith placed third after besting Austin Roskos 7-1 in the consolation final. Smith began his afternoon with an 11-8 decision victory over Roskos before falling to Washington and Lee's Brandon LeFore by major decision. The Bear, Delaware native rebounded to take a 13-6 decision over Ronald Mattox to set up a second meeting with Roskos.

Freshmen Bruce Parola (184), Colin Myles (197) and Joseph Moreno (HWT) battled valiantly in their respective weight classes before bowing out of the tournament.
