The Basics
  • The lead: Senior Dylan Peters was the top finisher as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's cross country team finished second Saturday at the 2019 Suffolk Invite, hosted by Suffolk University.
  • Location: Franklin Park - Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts
  • Short Story: Using a 5:23 mile pace, Peters completed the eight-kilometer course in 26:48.7 to lead Stevens' 18-runner contingent, missing out on an 8K personal best by 6.9 seconds. Peters finished eighth out of 245 runners. Suffolk's Matyas Csiki-Fejer won the race by nearly six seconds over Southern Maine's Yahya Nure. Southern Maine won the overall team title, compiling 47 points. The Ducks received a cowbell in recognition of their second-place finish with 73 points.
  • Of note: Founded in 1885, Franklin Park has been the home for cross country in the greater New England area since 1914. The course is home to the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship every other year and also hosted the IAAF World Cross Country Championship in 1982.
  • Also of note: The race was the final race of the regular season.

Top Finishers
  • Senior Jake Catalano was the second Duck to reach the finish, crossing the line in 26:57.2 for his second-fastest 8K time of the season. The Malverne, New York native finished 10th to join Peters in earning a medal of distinction.
  • Junior PJ Gunther finished third for the team, placing 18th with a time of 27:12.1.
  • Sophomores Trevor LaDue and Robby Russo finished within six-hundredths-of-a-second of one another. LaDue placed 22nd with a season-best time of 27:19.3, while Russo finished 23rd in 27:19.9 to match his best 8K time of the year. The pair rounded out Stevens' top-five, which were spread by 42.2 seconds.
  • Freshman William Schulz turned in an 8K personal best to finish 27th with a time of 27:38.9.
  • Sophomore Tom McKenna rounded out the Ducks' top-seven with a time of 27:56.6, which was good for 33rd place. The team's top-seven were spread by 1:07.9.
  • Sophomore Hayden Daly (28:13.4) and junior Sean James (28:15.8) were next to cross, finishing 43rd and 45th, respectively. James' mark was a season best.

Harden's Thoughts
  • "Suffolk hosted the meet at historic Franklin Park, where there have been cross country races since 1914. The course was in great condition and has a nice mix of grass, gravel, packed dirt, hills, and flat sections. We competed in the afternoon under sunny skies and comfortable temperatures in the high 50's. There was no significant wind and the footing was firm."
  • "This was our final tune-up meet prior to the MAC Championships in two weeks. We faced a smattering of New England schools in a similarly sized meet to the MAC Champs and I thought that our team did a great job of competing well throughout the race. We were more focused on place than time and our athletes continued to pass opponents and improve their placings over the second half of the race."
  • "Dylan Peters had the finest cross country race of his career, putting on a show and leading our team. Jake Catalano, PJ Gunther, and Dylan raced together as a trio for the first two Miles and then Dylan took off in the third and fourth miles, which consisted of the two Wilderness loops. This was our team's point of emphasis in our pre-race strategy, and Dylan executed the plan perfectly, moving from around 25th at the one-mile mark to fourth place with 50 meters to go. Jake fought well on his own and salvaged a solid 10th place finish. It was great to see our front pack of three working in tandem for the first time all year."
  • "Behind our top three, Trevor LaDue and Robby Russo looked their best this season, as they were able to roll over the final two miles and close with great form."
  • "Besides Dylan, no one on our team had a better race than Will Schulz. The rookie looked like a veteran in only his third-ever 8K race, passing more runners during the race than any other runner by virtue of great pacing once again."

Up Next
  • After a two-week layoff, men's cross country returns to the course on Saturday, Nov. 2 for the MAC Championships, hosted by Hood College at Utica District Park.
