The Basics
  • The lead: Senior Dylan Peters was the top finisher for the Stevens Institute of Technology men's cross country Saturday at the 46th Paul Short Run, presented by Asics and hosted by Lehigh University.
  • Location: Goodman Campus Cross Country Course - Galloway, Pennsylvania
  • Short Story: Using a 5:2682 mile pace, Peters completed the eight-kilometer course in a  time of 26:44.2 to lead Stevens' 19-runner contingent as the Ducks took part in the event's Open Race. Peters finished 217th out of 612 runners in the annual run that honors Lehigh's former Business Manager of Athletics and cross country enthusiast, Paul Short. The event features over 6,000 student-athletes from 450 colleges and high schools. The open division features runners from all three NCAA divisions and unattached runners. In total 14 races were held throughout the day.
  • Of note: There was not a team score compiled in the open race. Hartbeat Track Club's Everett Hackett topped the field with a time of 23:46.2. Stony Brook University's Luke Coulter was the top collegiate finisher, placing second with a time of 24:28.8.

Top Finishers
  • Stevens' top-five finishers were spread by just 26.44.2 seconds and the top seven were separated by 51.4 in the second eight-kilometer race of the season.
  • Nine different runners set new personal-bests at the race: sophomores Robby Russo, Vincent Schlenker, Cory Philippe and Hayden Daly, along with freshmen William Schulz, Ronnie Melao, Matt Halvorsen, Troy Tomasch and Andrew Donahue
  • Junior PJ Gunther was the second Duck to reach the finish, using a 5:24 mile to complete the course in 26.50.2

  • Sophomore Tom McKenna (27:25.6) and Daly (27:35.6) completed the top-seven.
  • Schulz turned in his best performance of the season, using a 5:35.6 mile pace to complete the course in 27:48.2.

Harden's Thoughts
  • "It was an honor and a thrill to compete at one of the largest, and finest, cross country meets in the world. We could not have had more ideal conditions in terms of temperature, firm footing and great competition. Our team competed in the first race of the day, the Open race, which featured post-collegians and student-athletes from all three NCAA divisions."
  • "Hayden Daly emphasized maintaining his pace through his third mile and he earned a new personal best."
  • "For the second meet in a row, Will Schulz demonstrated incredible racing instincts, pacing himself perfectly, moving through the field and flying on the downhills. He is a natural cross country runner, and it was great to see him excel in front of his friends and family on his home course."
  • "Our freshman trio of Troy, Ronnie, and Matt continue to make strides every week, and all three of them were rewarded with new 8K personal bests. Troy and Ronnie followed Will's lead with outstanding pacing, and they have adapted quickly to the 8K distance."
  • "Cory Philippe was having the race of his life two weeks ago at Stockton, but he suffered a hamstring strain late in the race as he was sprinting that prevented him from finishing. He rebounded at this meet in a big way, restraining himself early, maintaining his effort in the middle phase, and again demonstrated his outstanding finishing speed to the tune of a new personal best by over a minute-and-a-half!"

Up Next
  • After a two-week layoff, men's cross country returns to the course on Saturday, Oct. 19 for the Suffolk Invitational in Boston, Massachusetts, hosted by Suffolk University.
