Women's Fencing Finishes Second at EWFC Championship and Barnes Takes First in Individual Meet

Kiera Barnes defeated the two-time defending champion to be named EWFC Sabre Fencer of the Year.

NEW YORK, N.Y. (February 17, 2019) — The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team earned a second place finish at the EWFC Championships after defeating Drew (22-5), Haverford (18-9), Hunter (27-0), CCNY (26-1), Yeshiva (27-0), and Vassar (17-10), while only falling in a close match up to Johns Hopkins (12-15).

The meet began with the most difficult match of the day against Johns Hopkins University. The Ducks led by a couple of bouts for the majority of the match, but ultimately fell short on a few key bouts resulting in the narrow loss to the Blue Jays. Epee squad led the way with a 5-4 victory over JHU, but the 3-6 and 4-5 losses in foil and sabre, respectively, proved to be the difference.

During the match against Hunter, senior Michelle Drobish broke the Stevens record for most wins in sabre at 264 wins. Drobish ended the day with a total of 274 career wins and will continue to set the new record throughout the rest of the season.

  • Drobish finished with the most wins for the Ducks, ending with a 19-2 record.
  • Freshman Kiera Barnes and senior Julia Yang each finished at 18-3.

Individual Meet
After the team meet, the top 16 from each weapon participated in a direct elimination style individual competition. Kubit, Strezewski, Persau, and Urban-Spillane qualified for foil, but fell in the first round.

Choy, Odaimi and McEldoon all placed in the top eight at epee. Choy defeated her teammates to make her way to the finals, but was unable to defend her title as she lost to Rose Hulsey-Vincent of Vassar, whom she defeated in the same event last year. Odaimi made the Second All-EWFC team with 6th place and Choy and McEldoon made the First All-Conference team with 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.

Freshman Kiera Barnes defeated the two-time defending sabre champion, Erin Chen from Johns Hopkins, in the sabre finals and became EWFC Sabre Fencer of the Year while also being named First Team All-Conference. Drobish and Julia Yang placed 3rd and 4th, respectively, and joined Barnes on the First All-Conference team.

Up Next
  • The Ducks will compete in the FDU Invitational Sunday, Feb. 24 where they will fence against LIU Brooklyn, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Tufts, Wagner, Lafayette, Brandies and CCNY.
