Yang and Drobish Set New Program Record as Women’s Fencing Sweeps at FDU Invite

Julia Yang and Michelle Drobish broke the record for most wins in a single season at sabre while Teny Odaimi registered her 100th career win.

TEANECK, N.J. (February 23, 2019) — The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team swept all opponents to tie the program's record for most wins in a single season at the Fairleigh Dickinson University Invitational Sunday afternoon.

The Ducks defeated Tufts University (22-5), Lafayette College (21-3), The City College of New York (24-3), Long Island University-Post (24-3), Fairleigh Dickinson University (22-5) and New York University (17-10) to improve to 32-6 on the year.

Seniors Julia Yang and Michelle Drobish each broke the program's record for most sabre wins in a single season, as they both finished the day with 86 wins. The record (previously set at 80 wins) was snapped by the seniors during their match against LIU-Post. 

Epee
  • The epee squad went undefeated on the day, including sweeps over CCNY and NYU. 
  • Senior Amanda Choy only dropped one bout to lead epee fencers with a 16-1 record.
  • Teny Odaimi finished 15-3 overall
  • Senior Julie McEldoon registered a 14-2 finish.
  • Freshman Christine Chan tallied two wins at epee for Stevens.

Foil
Sabre
  • The sabre squad also went undefeated at the invite while sweeping CCNY, LIU-Post and FDU. 
  • EWFC Sabre Fencer of the Year Kiera Barnes led with her 13-1 record. 
  • Yang and Drobish ended their record-breaking day at 12-2 and 11-3, respectively. 
  • Freshman Bayla Gellerstein went undefeated with a 4-0 record. 
  • Freshman Gabriela Onelli registered a 3-1 record, while sophomore Kian Wissemann ended the day at 2-2.
