Baseball Falls to No. 16/No. 11 Cortland

Three runs from Cortland in the seventh inning allowed the Red Dragons to top the Ducks in Hoboken.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 10, 2019)  – SUNY-Cortland scored three runs in the seventh inning to take the lead and top the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team 7-4 Sunday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at Dobbelaar Field.

The Ducks took the lead in the bottom of the second inning when junior Patrick Rood doubled to center field before sophomore Charles Kwong registered a single to bring in Rood for the first run. Next at bat, senior Carlos Leon singled through the left side to push Kwong to second base. With senior Matthew Pasko at the plate, Kwong and Leon advanced on a wild pitch before the Ringoes, New Jersey native singled up the middle to bring in both runners, giving Stevens a 3-0 lead.

Sophomore J.C. Hanley gave the Ducks their fourth run in the third inning when the Carmel, Indiana native hit a ground-rule double before reaching home on a wild pitch.

The Red Dragons recorded their first run of the game thanks to a homerun from Brian Corporan in the top of the fourth. Cortland shortened their deficit to two in the top of sixth when Corporan registered his second homer of the game after knocking one over the right field fence.

In the seventh inning, Joe Tardif walked before stealing second. In the next at bat Scott Giordano hit a double to right center, allowing Tardif to bring Cortland within one. Dan Schweitzer walked before Wyatt Myers singled to load the bases. Freshman Hunter Counton (0-1) then walked Corporan, sending Giordano home for the tying run. Schweitzer then advanced on a wild pitch to give the Red Dragons the lead.

"We took another step forward today in a lot of ways as a team, although it was not the result we wanted," commented head baseball coach Kristaps Aldins. "One of the bigger on-the-field takeaways was Ryan Larsen showing that he is a Pitcher of the Year candidate in our league and region. We are excited to get back to our team training on Tuesday and then facing another fun challenge in Misericordia on Wednesday."

Schweitzer registered a home run to right field in the first at bat of the ninth inning to give the Red Dragons a two-run lead. Marcos Perivolaris reached base after hitting a single. Corporan doubled to right field before BeVard intentionally walked to load the bases. Mat Bruno then reached first on a fielder's choice and Perivolaris sprinted home for Cortland's final run of the game.

Larsen pitched the first six innings for Stevens, striking out nine batters and allowing just two runs. Ryan Flansburg (1-0) earned the win for the Red Dragons, while Isiah Hudson was credited with the save.
