Baseball Edged by RV/No. 5 Misericordia

Misericordia scored six runs in the sixth inning to take a lead they would not give up.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 13, 2019)  – RV/No. 5 Misericordia scored six runs in the sixth inning to take the lead and top the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team 7-5 Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference contest at Dobbelaar Field.

The Ducks took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when junior A.J. Falconite singled to right field prior to senior Donny Gherardi hit a triple down the left field line to bring in the first run of the game. Junior Patrick Rood then hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Gherardi to give Stevens a 2-0 lead heading into the top of the second.

The Cougars recorded their first run of the day in the top of the third inning after Santo Guinta worked a walk with the bases load to put Misericordia on the board.

Guinta led off the sixth inning with a walk before Dalton Emerich hit a double to right center, advancing Guinta to third. Next at bat, Billy Kerwien registered an RBI-groundout that brought in Guinta to tie the game and sent Emerich to third. Conor Smith then hit a sacrifice bunt and reached first on an error, allowing Emerich to score and give Misericordia the lead.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, Kenny Jarema hit a two-run homer to put the Cougars up 5-2. Parker Abate reached base on a single prior to Steve Weisensee's single through the left side to put Abate in scoring position. Tyler Holzapfel ended the scoring for Misericordia with a two-run single.

"We showed a lot of fight today and gave it a run at the end," stated head baseball coach Kristaps Aldins. "Unfortunately, the big six-run inning by Misericordia got the best of us and we let a couple of tack-on runs score that could have made the difference. Both Roy Iversen and Alex Smith pitched very well in relief, which was great to see."

Senior Carlos Leon gave the Ducks hope for a comeback after recording his first homerun of the season in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Eric Zickert pinch ran for freshman Tom James after the Murrieta, California native walked to first. Next up, Pasko hit an RBI-double to help Stevens climb their way back.

The Ducks cut the lead to two in the bottom of the eighth when sophomore J.C. Hanley hit his first collegiate homerun to right center. Kyle Melahn then struck out two batters in the bottom of the ninth to hold Stevens to five and give Misericordia their eighth win of the season.
