NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (March 16, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team scored three runs in the eighth inning to take the lead and top Tufts University 8-7 Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium.
Tufts took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Peter DeMaria hit a two-run double to center field. Next at bat, JP Knight hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Ryan Daues for the third run of the inning.
In the top of the third, graduate student
Tommy Baronner hit a sacrifice fly to left field that brought in senior
Matthew Pasko for the Ducks first run of the game. With sophomore
J.C. Hanley and senior
Donny Gherardi on first and second, respectively, junior
Patrick Rood registered his first homerun of the 2019 season to give Stevens a 4-3 lead.
The Jumbos tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Elias Varinos scored following an error by Hanley behind the plate. Tufts then took a one-point advantage in the sixth inning when Knight scored after Harrison Frickman lined out to right field.
After senior
Carlos Leon reached base on a fielder's choice in the top of the eighth, junior
A.J. Falconite singled through the right side to send Leon to third. With Gherardi up to bat, the Oradell, New Jersey native singled through the left side to advance Falconite and bring in Leon to give Stevens the lead. Baronner followed with a fielder's choice that pushed Gherardi to second before an error allowed him to advance to third and sent Falconite home.
Another error by the Jumbos allowed Baronner to advance to third and Gherardi to score the Ducks' final run of the game.
"Hard fought win for the Ducks tonight," expressed head baseball coach
Kristaps Aldins. "The bats came alive and we put up some crooked run innings on a few different occasions. Then our bullpen bent but didn't break at the end, which truly was great to see."
Tufts attempted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth with one RBI apiece for Knight and Daues, but Justin Mills filed out for the final out of the game.
