Katie Weeks of the 11th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology women's track and field team finished eighth in the weight throw to earn All-America honors Friday evening at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships.
It's the second straight season that Weeks has earned All-America status in the weight throw after placing seventh in 2018.
Seeded fourth, Weeks reached a distance of 17.24 meters to finish more than nine inches ahead of University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's Brianna Schyvinck, who reached 17.01 meters on her final attempt to place ninth. Wesleyan's Ivie Uzamere hit 19.36 meters on her final attempt to edge Rhode Island College's Chelsea Yang. Yang was the top seed and reached 19.21 meters on her second attempt. The duo were the only competitors to cross 19 meters.
Weeks will compete in the shot put Saturday in her attempt to collect multiple All-America honors in back-to-back seasons.Â
In a one-hour span, junior
Gina Dello Russo advanced to the finals of both the 200 and 400-meter dashes. In the 400, Dello Russo finished with the top preliminary time, reaching the finish line in 56.29 seconds. The Whippany, New Jersey native entered the race as the fourth overall seed. George Fox's Sarah King, who was the top seed in the race, finished third. In the 200, Dello Russo advanced to the finals with a time of 25.10 seconds, which was the fifth-fastest time among the qualifiers. Loras' Gabrielle Reed earned the top seed in Saturday's final with a time of 24.38 seconds. King, who also held the top seed in the 200, finished fourth. Dello Russo earned top-eight finishes in both races to capture her first career All-America honors.
In Stevens' final race of the day, senior
Alex Kainer turned in one of the best performances in school history in the 200-meter dash, but did not advance to Saturday's finals. The South Brunswick, New Jersey native finished ninth with a time of 21.95 seconds, which was two-hundredths-of-a-second behind Rutgers-Camden's Cameron Dobbins for the last spot in the finals. University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Calden Wojt took first in the preliminaries with a time of 21.60 seconds. Wesley's Kai Cole, who was the top seed in the race was disqualified.Â
