NEW ORLEANS, La. (January 30, 2020) – Sophomore
Trinity Lundemo of the Stevens Institute of Technology women's cross country team was named an All-Academic Athlete by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA), the governing body announced Thursday as part of its NCAA and NAIA Academic Awards.
In order to qualify for the All-Academic distinction, student-athletes must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.30 on a 4.0 scale and finish in the top-25 percent of their respective regional championship meet. In total, 309 men and 378 women earned the academic accolade.
In the classroom, Lundemo achieved a 3.762 cumulative GPA, and on the course, the Tappan, New York native placed 59th out of 274 runners at the Atlantic Region Division III Women's Cross Country Championship on Nov. 16. Lundemo completed the six-kilometer course in Canton, New York in a time of 24:03.9 to post the second-fastest six-kilometer time of her career.
"USTFCCCA's All-Academic individual honor is one of my favorite awards because it requires a strong GPA and exemplary athletic performance on the big stage, the epitome of what it means to be a student-athlete," said head coach
Lance Harden. "Trinity has excelled academically at Stevens, making our President's List again this fall, and she took a huge step forward in cross country this season, lowering her 6K personal best by nearly a minute and developing into our top runner at the majority of the meets. She raced with confidence and fearlessness, putting herself in the front pack at three of the regular season invitationals where she ultimately placed in the top-six overall."
Additionally, men's and women's cross country each earned All-Academic team honors from the USTFCCCA. To be eligible for the team academic award, teams must have a cumulative GPA of 3.1 on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period, among other qualifiers. Women's Cross Country achieved a 3.65 GPA, while Men's Cross Country placed 15th in Division III with a 3.63 GPA.
"Our women's team again excelled in the classroom with six of our 11 women achieving President's List honors (3.75 GPA or above in Fall 2019)," Harden said. "Our men really stepped up this fall in the classroom, boosting our team's cumulative GPA by 0.17 in one year. One of our team goals heading into this year was to get our average over 3.5 and they went above and beyond that challenge."
"Our student-athletes wake up early throughout the fall for practices before classes," the second-year head coach continued. "So it is a testament to their time management skills, work ethic, and overall balance that they are able to perform so well academically and athletically."
It's the ninth straight season that both the men's women's cross country team received the All-Academic honor. All totaled, 172 men's teams and 212 women's teams were recognized by the USTFCCCA.
