NEW YORK, N.Y. (November 19, 2021)  – Senior Logan Rechler posted a 5-4 victory over Alan Zheng in the final foil bout to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology men's fencing team to a thrilling 14-13 victory over Johns Hopkins University Friday evening at the Columbia Invitational.

The Ducks and the Blue Jays alternated 6-3 scores at saber and epee, with Stevens holding the advantage in epee and Johns Hopkins holding it at saber. Rechler's victory was the Hoboken, New Jersey resident's second of the match after besting Noah Park by a 5-4 score.

The victory enabled Stevens to leave New York City with a split, after the Ducks fell to hosting Columbia University 18-9 earlier in the evening. The split left Stevens with a 16-6 record. Stevens and Johns Hopkins have alternated wins over one another in the last six meetings.

"What a finish to an exciting match," said acting head coach Linda Vollkommer-Lynch. "To have a match like that come down to the final point in the final match is just a great way to end a bout, while also picking up a really important victory. Against Columbia, we really fenced a good match against a quality Division I program, but ultimately, we couldn't pull off the victory."

Joining Rechler in posting victories against Johns Hopkins were first-year Thomas Cheng, senior Wolfe Crouse, senior Andy Faubert, junior Patrick Pan, first-year John Morreale, senior Matthew Jacobson and first-year Colin Mahoney. Cheng won three times at epee, enabling Rechler to propel the Ducks to the victory with his second win of the evening.

Crouse, Faubert and Pan won five straight bouts to open the epee scoring, with Crouse and Faubert each winning twice in the opening sequence. Crouse's 5-2 win over Gabe Insler secured the victory in the epee bouts. Faubert completed a perfect 3 for 3 performance against the Blue Jays with a 5-4 win over Insler.

In the saber bouts, each of the Ducks three fencers won one bout, setting the stage for the dramatic finish in the foil matches.

Against hosting Columbia, Cheng won a pair of matches at foil, as Stevens won four of the nine bouts. The Ducks also posted a similar result at epee, with Pan winning three times to lead the efforts. Mahoney scored the only saber victory for the Ducks to account for the final margin.
