Men’s Fencing Posts 4-2 Record at Part II of the Ranger Invite

First-year Colin Mahoney leads all Stevens fencers with 11 wins on the day

MADISON, N.J. (Nov. 7, 2021) – Led by a nearly perfect effort at epee, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's fencing team finished the Drew Ranger Invitational – Part II with a 4-2 record, earning wins over the University of Florida, Drew University (B), Clemson University and Army on the day.

The Ducks started the day by dropping contests against Princeton University and Drew (A) before bouncing back to win the last four matchups of the day to improve to 9-3 on the season.

The epee squad led the way on the day with a 36-18 overall record, winning five of their six weapon bouts. Stevens posted a 33-21 record at sabre and a 31-23 record at foil as the Ducks won 100 of 162 total bouts in the competition.

Individually, first-year Colin Mahoney led all Stevens student-athletes with 11 wins in the competition while seniors Tom Gana, Ryan McLaughlin and Andy Faubert all had nine victories each.

Vs. Princeton (Loss 23-4)
  • Senior Wolfe Crouse, Faubert and junior Patrick Pan all produced one victory apiece at epee as the Ducks fell 6-3.
  • Stevens failed to pick up a win at foil against the Tigers, dropping a 9-0 decision.
  • Mahoney earned the only sabre win in the bout as they lost 8-1.
Vs. Drew (A) (Loss 16-11)
  • The epee squad took down the Rangers 5-4 thanks to a pair of wins from both Crouse and Gana as well as another by senior Gabe Toltus.
  • Seniors Noah Ehrlich and Logan Rechler produced the lone two wins at foil for the Ducks as Stevens fell 7-2.
  • Junior Dylan Woodward earned a pair of wins while Mahoney and senior Matthew Jacobson won one bout each as sabre dropped a narrow 5-4 decision.
Vs. Florida (Win 27-0) Vs. Drew (B) (Win 14-13)
  • Toltus was a perfect 3-0, Scott went 2-1 and Gana added a single win to lead epee to a 6-3 victory over the Rangers.
  • Foil dropped a 6-3 decision as Rechler won a pair of bouts and Ehlrich grabbed a single victory.
  • Mahoney went 3-0, Jacobson and Woodward produced one win apiece to send sabre to a 5-4 win and seal the overall victory over Drew.
Vs. Clemson (Win 22-5)
  • Sophomore Caleb Romero earned his first two wins of the day while Bauman, Gana, Scott and Toltus had one victory each to lead epee to a 6-3 win.
  • Rechler picked up two victories and Ehrlich added another as foil dropped a 6-3 decision.
  • Stevens won 7-2 at sabre thanks to a perfect 3-0 record by Woodward and 2-1 records from Jacobson and Mahoney.
Vs. Army (Win 22-5)
  • The Ducks closed the day with a 7-2 win at epee thanks to a 3-0 record by Gana and 2-1 scores from Scott and Toltus.
  • Foil had their most impressive performance of the day with a 8-1 win as McLaughlin went 3-0, Grzeda went 2-0 and Matthews, Rechler and Amodemo won one bout each.
  • Mahoney posted another 3-0 record and Jacobson and Woodward had 2-1 records to send sabre to a 7-2 win.

  • Stevens returns to the strips in the Vassar Invitational in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Sunday, Nov. 14.
  • The Ducks will face off against Hunter College, Drew, Vassar College, Cornell University, Haverford College, Sacred Heart University, Yeshiva University and Denison University in the competition.
