Coffey Nets Career High, but Men’s Basketball Unable to Solve No. 5 Yeshiva

3/9/2021 12:50:00 AM

Box Score HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 9, 2021)  – Sophomore Conor Coffey finished with a career-high 14 points but the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team fell to No. 5 Yeshiva University 88-70 Monday evening in a non-conference matchup at Canavan Arena.

Fellow sophomore Lorenzo Spinazzi also set a career high with 14 points for the Ducks, who fell to 0-3. It was the first meeting between the teams since February 20, 2007, when the teams met in the quarterfinals of the Skyline Conference Tournament.

All-American Ryan Turell netted 25 points and Eitan Halpert made 6 of 7 from behind the arc to finish with a game-high 32 points for Yeshiva, who remained perfect at 7-0 to extend their winning streak to 36 games. Yeshiva holds the longest active winning streak by a men's basketball team across all NCAA divisions; Hope College women's basketball has won 45 straight after claiming the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association title on Mar. 6. The Maccabees' victory snapped Stevens' four-game winning streak in the all-time series.

Coffey, who appeared in just 10 games in his first season on Castle Point, made 3 of 4 attempts from the field in the first half and 3 of 5 in the second, to finish with 14 points. The Monroe, New York native also pulled down three rebounds and dished out four assists to finish with his most complete performance as a Duck.

Senior Alec DiPietrantonio provided a spark in the game's first minute, hitting a short jumper in the paint on the opening possession. The Mount Laurel, New Jersey native fell a basket shy of his 26th career double-double.

Stevens had a stingy defense working in their favor in the early going, forcing three straight misses for Yeshiva in the game's opening minutes. The Maccabees finally got on the board when Matan Zucker corralled a Gabriel Leifer miss and went back up for a second-chance layup to knot the game at two.

The Ducks continued to keep their high-scoring opponent in check through the early portion of the opening half. Yeshiva, who entered the game averaging over 81 points per contest, missed 10 of their first 14 shots and committed four turnovers over the first eight minutes of the contest, forcing a timeout. Conversely, a Coffey jumper and a Spinazzi triple tied the game at nine at the 11:05 mark, bringing some energy into the fanless Canavan Arena.

Halpert quickly put Yeshiva back in front with an impressive jumper but DiPietrantonio scored on a second-chance layup to again draw the teams even at 11.

Showing why they entered the game with the longest active winning streak in men's college basketball, the Maccabees went on the first of three key stretches that provided separation between the two programs.

With the score tied at 11, just beyond the midway mark of the opening half, Halpert hit a pair of free throws to put the guests back in front. Ofek Reef forced a turnover in the frontcourt and Halpert drained a contested three right in front of the scorers' table to push the lead to five. A traveling violation would return the ball to Yeshiva and Turell smoothly sank a short jumper to make it seven points in just over a minute. The Maccabees would go on a lengthy run shortly thereafter to take a 26-point lead into the intermission.

Good shooting propelled the Ducks to a strong start in the second half. Senior Maguire Sweeney and sophomore Jacob Krantz sank back-to-back threes to trim the margin to 20. Stevens would shoot 51.5 percent in the second half, including 12 of its final 20 attempts from the floor, to outscore Yeshiva 47-39 over the final 20 minutes.
