Golf Takes Third at Alvernia Spring Invite to Close Out Regular Season

Cortese and Labenski tie for seventh to lead Ducks in final event before MAC Freedom tournament

The Basics
  • The lead: Seniors Vincent Cortese and Luke Labenski each tied for seventh place to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology men's golf team to a third-place finish Tuesday at the Alvernia Spring Invitational, hosted by Alvernia University.
  • Score: Stevens (303) - third place out of 12 teams
  • Location: LedgeRock Golf Club - Mohnton, Pa. (Par 71 - 6,546 yards)
  • Short Story: In the team's final event before the MAC Freedom Championship, Cortese and Labenski each finished with a 4-over 75 to tie for seventh place out of 60 competing student-athletes. The pair combined for seven birdies on the day. Labenski also par'd 11 holes. As a team, the Ducks totaled 13 birdies and one eagle, while totaling 44 par-scores.
  • The Leaderboard: York College of Pennsylvania won the team title, carding a combined team score of 294 to finish 10-over. Campbellsville University finished four shots behind the Spartans. On the individual side, York's Riley Rohlfs carded the lowest round of the day, finishing with an even-par 71.
  • Of note: Campbellsville University is ranked ninth among all NAIA institutions per the Golfstat team rankings.
  • Also of note: Stevens was the highest finisher of the four competing MAC Freedom institutions.

The Finishes
  • First-year Gus Vickers had the third-best round of the day for the Ducks, finishing a shot behind Cortese and Labenski with a 76. He actually tied with two other student-athletes for the best performance in the tournament on the course's four par-5 holes, finishing two-under.
  • Sophomore Eegan McDermott shot a 6-over 77 and classmate Miles Philion finished with an 83 to round out the Ducks' entrants. McDermott posted the tournament's lone eagle, which took place on the par-4 12th hole.
